You hold the power button, expect the old Google Assistant, and Gemini pops up instead. You dig through settings for the switch you used last time, and it’s gone. If you’re trying to switch back to Google Assistant on an Android phone, here’s the honest answer. Google discontinued Assistant on phones starting September 3, 2026, and the “Switch to Google Assistant” option has been removed, so there’s no official way back.

Frustrating? Absolutely. But you’re not stuck with a Gemini setup you hate. You can control when it opens, fix the things it gets wrong, or take it off your power button entirely.

Why You Can’t Switch Back to Google Assistant Anymore

Let’s back up a little. Google first announced plans to move phones from Assistant to Gemini in 2025, then pushed the deadline into 2026. In August 2026, a Google community manager posted the final timeline on the Google Assistant Community.

The message was blunt. Starting September 3, Assistant on mobile devices is discontinued, and Gemini becomes the voice assistant on Android. Once access is removed, Google says you can no longer use or switch back to Google Assistant on your phone, tablet or paired devices.

Fast forward to late September. 9to5Google reported that the “Switch to Google Assistant” shortcut had vanished from the bottom of the Gemini app’s account menu, and that Assistant was gone on every device it checked in the US and Europe.

So if you’re following an old tutorial that tells you to tap your profile picture and pick Switch to Google Assistant, that’s why it doesn’t work. The guide isn’t wrong. It’s just out of date.

“The switch didn’t break. Google removed it, and no setting will bring it back.”

What the Change Means for Your Phone, Watch and Car

Here’s the thing. This isn’t only about your phone. When Gemini becomes your phone’s assistant, it also takes over on devices paired with it.

    DeviceAssistant status now
Android phones and tabletsReplaced by Gemini
    Wear OS watchesReplaced by Gemini
Gemini-compatible headphones and earbudsReplaced by Gemini
Android Auto (projected from your phone)Replaced by Gemini
Cars with Google built-inGoogle Assistant keeps working
Nest and Google Home speakers and displaysNot affected by this change

That last row matters. If your kitchen speaker still answers as Google Assistant, nothing has changed there yet.

How to Take Back Control of Gemini on Your Phone

You can’t bring Assistant back, but you can decide exactly when Gemini shows up. All of the steps below come from Google’s own guide to managing Gemini on Android. Menu names vary a little by phone maker, so use the search bar in Settings if something isn’t where you expect.

    1. Stop Gemini from opening on the power button

This is the number one complaint. You press and hold the power button to turn your phone off, and Gemini appears instead.

    1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
    2. Tap System, then Gestures.
    3. Tap Press and hold power button.
    4. Pick the action you want, such as the power menu.

If you can’t find it, search Settings for “power”, “side button” or “gesture”.

    2. Turn off “Hey Google” if you don’t want voice activation

Maybe Gemini keeps jumping in during conversations. You can stop the hotword without removing Gemini.

    1. Open the Gemini app.
    2. Tap Menu, then your profile picture or initial.
    3. Go to Settings, then Talk to Gemini hands-free.
    4. Turn off “Hey Google”.

    3. Keep Gemini off your lock screen

If Gemini opening on a locked phone bothers you, open the Gemini app, tap your profile picture, go to Settings and then Gemini on lock screen, and turn off Use Gemini without unlocking.

    4. Change your default assistant app or remove it

Here’s the catch most people miss. Deleting the Gemini app doesn’t remove Gemini as your default digital assistant. To change that, use your phone’s settings instead.

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Tap Apps, then Default apps.
    3. Tap Digital assistant app, then Default digital assistant app.
    4. Choose a different installed assistant app, or choose None.

Note that “Google” covers both Gemini and the old Assistant in this menu. If you pick None, holding the power button or saying “Hey Google” won’t launch anything.

The key takeaway here is simple. Customise first, and only remove Gemini as your default if you truly don’t want a voice assistant on your phone.

How to Make Gemini Do What Assistant Used To Do

Lots of the anger online comes down to one thing. Gemini refuses tasks that Assistant handled in a second. In many cases, that’s a permissions problem, not a missing feature.

    1. Turn on Device assistance and notification access

Google says Gemini uses a connected app called Device assistance (formerly Utilities) to control your phone. It can manage alarms and timers, open apps, control media and change settings.

There’s a condition, though. To let Gemini read and reply to notifications, you need to allow the Google app access to your notifications. Without that, requests like “read my last message” won’t work.

    2. Keep Google as your default assistant for quick toggles

According to Google’s Device assistance page, Gemini can only switch things like Airplane mode, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Do Not Disturb, Battery Saver and the flashlight when the Google app is your default digital assistant. The same goes for changing volume, taking a screenshot and powering off your phone.

So if you set your default assistant to None and then wonder why “turn on the flashlight” fails, that’s the reason.

    3. Check your clock app for alarms and timers

Alarms behave differently depending on your phone. On HONOR, OnePlus, OPPO, Samsung, TECNO and Xiaomi phones, Gemini uses the maker’s own clock app. On other phones, it prefers the Clock app by Google when it’s enabled.

If you use a third-party clock app, Gemini can only set, check, update and delete alarms and timers there. Anything else isn’t supported.

    4. Reconnect your smart home controls

Do your lights ignore you now? Google says Gemini controls smart home devices through the Google Home app as a connected app, and there are three conditions.

    • Keep Activity must be on. Gemini can’t connect to Google Home when this setting is off.
    • Use a personal Google Account. Work and school accounts can’t use this feature for now.
    • Set up Voice Match. If “Hey Google” doesn’t work, check that it’s set up along with Voice Match.

Google also notes that home controls are for convenience only, and Gemini can’t do some security actions such as unlocking a door. Check the smart home help page for the full list.

Common Gemini Complaints and What to Try

Reports from Android owners have been far from glowing. USA Today summed up the reaction in late September, citing complaints about Gemini playing the wrong version of a requested song and taking longer to control smart home devices than Assistant did.

    ComplaintWhat to try
Gemini opens when you hold the power buttonChange the press and hold gesture in Settings
Gemini can’t toggle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or the flashlightSet Google as your default digital assistant app
Gemini won’t read your messagesAllow notification access for the Google app
Smart home commands failTurn on Keep Activity and connect Google Home
Alarms don’t show up where you expectCheck which clock app Gemini is using
You want no assistant at allSet the default digital assistant app to None

Not every complaint has a fix yet. Some requests that Assistant handled well, like navigating to a contact’s saved address in the car, have drawn early criticism. Google is still updating Gemini, so some of these gaps may close over time.

If you’re weighing up other AI tools while you adjust, our Grok vs ChatGPT comparison and our look at ChatGPT’s Intelligent UI show how the other assistants are changing too.

Is There Any Unofficial Way to Get Assistant Back?

You’ll see forum posts suggesting old app versions or hidden settings. Be careful. Google’s announcement is clear that once availability is removed, Assistant is gone from phones and paired devices.

Installing old Google app files from unofficial sites is a security risk, and even if it seemed to work for a while, it wouldn’t last. Your time is better spent tuning Gemini to behave the way you want.

“You can’t turn back the clock on Assistant, but you can decide when Gemini speaks up.”

Google keeps adding features to Gemini, too. Our breakdown of Gemini 4 Argon shows where the model behind it is heading, and our guide to AI personal assistants covers how to get more out of tools like it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still switch back to Google Assistant on Android?

No. Google began removing Assistant from phones on September 3, 2026, and the Switch to Google Assistant option is gone from the Gemini app. Once it’s removed from your phone, there’s no official way to bring it back.

Does this change affect my Google Nest or Home speaker?

No. Google says the change only covers phones, tablets and devices paired to them. Nest and Google Home speakers and displays aren’t affected by this change.

Will Google Assistant still work in my car?

It depends on the car. Android Auto projected from your phone now uses Gemini. Cars with Google built-in keep Google Assistant beyond September 3, 2026.

If I uninstall the Gemini app, will Assistant come back?

No. Deleting the Gemini app doesn’t remove Gemini as your default digital assistant, and it won’t restore Assistant. To stop Gemini from launching, change the default digital assistant app in Settings.

How do I stop Gemini from opening when I hold the power button?

Open Settings, tap System, then Gestures, then Press and hold power button, and pick a different action. If the menu looks different, search Settings for “power” or “side button”.

Why can’t Gemini turn on my flashlight or Wi-Fi?

Gemini can only change settings like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the flashlight when the Google app is your default digital assistant. Set it in Settings under Apps, Default apps and Digital assistant app.

Why won’t Gemini control my smart lights?

Gemini needs the Google Home app connected, Keep Activity turned on and a personal Google Account. Work and school accounts can’t control smart home devices through Gemini for now.

    Making Peace With Gemini

Losing a tool you’ve used for years is annoying, and you’re far from alone in feeling that way. Still, a few minutes in settings goes a long way. Fix the power button, grant the right permissions, reconnect your smart home, and Gemini starts to feel a lot less like an intruder.

Give it a week with those tweaks in place. You might find it handles more than you expected.
