Usually the one covering dinner while everyone promises to pay you back? The Venmo credit card’s new rewards give you 3% back on eligible dining and entertainment, rising to 4% when you split the purchase in Venmo and your friends repay within 30 days. Venmo announced the update on October 5, 2026, with 3% on qualifying Venmo payments and 1% on other purchases.

That extra percentage point depends on more than sending a request. Before you count on it, here are the main details.

What Changed on the Venmo Credit Card

Your biggest spending category used to decide where you earned the highest rate. Under the new rewards, dining, entertainment and qualifying Venmo payments get set rates, regardless of which category takes the biggest bite out of your budget. Here’s how the two versions compare.

Reward featureOld rewards for approvals before September 24, 2026New rewards for approvals after September 24, 2026
Highest spending category3%No automatic top-category rate
    Second-highest spending category2%No automatic second-category rate

Venmo checkout and business paymentsRate varied under the previous structure3% on qualifying payments
    Other purchases1%1%
Reward timingAdded after each statement periodAdded daily after transactions complete

The previous categories included groceries, dining, travel, gas, transportation, bills and utilities, health and beauty, and entertainment. You didn’t have to select your winners each month. Your spending determined which categories earned 3% and 2%.

You see, that changes what the card rewards. If groceries or travel regularly topped your spending, those purchases could previously earn 3%. Under the new structure, they earn 1%, while eligible dining and entertainment earn 3% without needing to rank first.

The dates need a little care, too. Venmo’s announcement names October 15 as the start for new cards, while its help center separates the programs by September 24 approval dates. Those published dates differ, so your approval date and assigned rewards program matter.

How the Extra 1% Split Bonus Works

You earn the base 3% when you make an eligible dining or entertainment purchase. Getting to 4% takes another step, followed by actual repayment from your friends. Here’s how to put the split through.

    1. Pay with your card. Use the Venmo credit card for an eligible dining or entertainment purchase. That purchase earns the standard 3% before any split bonus applies.
    2. Find the transaction in Venmo. Open the app and look for Transactions under your credit card. Venmo’s instructions refer to either the Money tab or the Me tab, depending on the app layout.
    3. Select the purchase you’re sharing. Choose the relevant card transaction to start the split. The amount you divide can include the tip or a surcharge, so the request can cover more than the menu total.
    4. Choose your friends and send the request. Add the people sharing the expense, include a payment note and send the split through the app. Complete this step within 30 days of the purchase.
    5. Make sure your friends repay you. Sending the request doesn’t finish the process. Your friends must pay through Venmo within the required 30-day window for the extra 1% to apply.

Rules That Decide If You Get It

A pending request won’t earn you the bonus. Everyone included in the split must pay within the deadline, so one unpaid share can keep you from receiving the extra percentage point.

And the card bill? You’re responsible for the full amount charged, even if a friend never sends their share. The split feature doesn’t transfer that responsibility to the people you request money from.

    A Quick Dollar Example

Say you charge a $200 dinner for four to your card. At 3%, you earn $6 in cash back.

Complete the qualifying split and have your friends repay on time, and the total becomes $8. The split adds $2 to the reward on that same dinner.

What Counts as Dining and Entertainment

Your eligible spending can go beyond a restaurant meal or a concert ticket. Venmo includes several everyday purchases in these categories, though the extra 1% still requires a qualifying split and repayment. Here are the types of purchases included.

    • Restaurants and bakeries. Your eligible restaurant meals and bakery purchases fall within dining, which earns the base 3% under the new program.
    • Takeout and delivery. You don’t have to eat at the restaurant. Eligible takeout and food delivery purchases count, with DoorDash among Venmo’s named examples.
    • Bars and liquor stores. Dining and nightlife includes eligible purchases at both, extending the category beyond food.
    • Streaming and digital purchases. Eligible streaming services, digital books, movies, music, games and apps are included in entertainment.
    • Concerts and movies. Movie theaters and concert tickets qualify within the eligible categories. Venmo specifically names Ticketmaster as an example.
    • Sports and days out. Eligible professional sporting events, bowling, amusement parks and aquariums are included, too.

The useful distinction is where your purchase falls in the rewards program. Groceries, travel, bills and healthcare sit at 1% under the new structure. Splitting one of those purchases doesn’t make it eligible for the dining and entertainment bonus.

The 3% Pay With Venmo Rate and Its Fine Print

You don’t need a dinner bill or concert ticket to earn 3% through Venmo. Eligible payments made through the app or its checkout button earn that rate when you use your Venmo credit card. Here’s where it applies.

    • Online checkout. Select the Venmo button on a participating website or app, then choose your card as the payment method.
    • Business profiles. Use your card to fund an eligible payment to a business on Venmo.
    • Goods and services. Qualifying purchases from someone through Venmo can earn 3% when charged to the card.
    • Purchase-enabled payments. Venmo includes person-to-person transactions with “turn on for purchases” enabled, but fees deserve a separate check.

Using some of your Venmo balance at checkout? You earn cash back only on the amount charged to your card, not the full order total.

Here’s the catch. Venmo lists a 3% fee for sending money with a credit card. If that fee applies to a payment earning 3%, the charge can cancel out your reward, so check the fee shown before confirming.

If the transaction fails, our guide to a declined Venmo payment covers that separate issue. A rewards rate doesn’t guarantee that your payment will go through.

    Fees, APR and Approval Details

You won’t pay an annual fee or a foreign transaction fee, but other costs still matter. NerdWallet lists the APRs below, which can change, so check the card’s Terms & Rates before applying. Here are the charges and application details to know.

Fee or rateWhat you can expect
    Annual fee$0
    Foreign transaction fee$0
Purchase APRVariable, ranging from 18.74% to 30.74%
    Cash advance APRVariable at 30.74%
    Introductory APRNo introductory 0% offer
    Credit card-funded payments to friends3%
    Instant transfer1.75%, with a $0.25 minimum and $25 maximum
    • Eligibility. You must be at least 18 and live in the United States or its territories. Your Venmo account needs at least 30 days of history, good standing and a successful credit review.
    • Credit check. A declined application doesn’t affect your score. Approval triggers a hard inquiry that may affect it.
    • Card access. You receive a virtual card number in the app immediately after approval.
    • Fraud protection. You have $0 liability for qualifying unauthorized activity. That protection doesn’t cover people you authorized. Card issuers also use AI to spot fraud, but you should still watch out for payment scam texts.
    • Mobile wallets. You can use Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay and still earn rewards.

Under the daily program, rewards post after transactions complete and have no expiration date. However, closing, suspending or unlinking your card or Venmo account can cause you to lose unredeemed cash back.

Pros and Cons of the New Setup

The new rewards give you a set 3% rate on eligible dining and entertainment, with another percentage point available through qualifying splits. Whether that helps you depends on where you spend and whether your friends settle up. Here’s what you gain and what deserves a closer look.

    ProsCons
You can earn 4% on eligible dining and entertainment when the split conditions are met.Your extra 1% depends on everyone in the split paying within the deadline.
You pay no annual fee or foreign transaction fee.You no longer get an automatic higher rate for whichever category leads your spending.
Your completed transactions earn rewards through the daily program.Grocery, gas and travel purchases earn 1% under the new structure.
Your cash back has no earning cap.Credit card-funded payments to friends can carry a 3% fee.
Qualifying Venmo checkout and business payments earn 3%.There’s no introductory 0% APR, and NerdWallet lists a variable purchase APR of 18.74%-30.74%.
Eligible dining earns 3% even without a split. No public welcome bonus was reported at the time of writing, though you may see targeted offers in the app.

You see, the headline 4% is conditional. Your everyday spending and completed repayments determine how much of it you actually receive.

Who Should Get It and Who Should Pass

Your spending habits matter more than the biggest percentage in the headline. The Venmo credit card makes more sense when dining, entertainment and Venmo payments already feature in your routine. Here’s how to judge the fit.

    Good Fit

If you regularly cover restaurant bills or concert tickets and split them through Venmo, the extra 1% fits something you already do. You still earn 3% on eligible dining and entertainment when you don’t split.

You may find the card useful if you frequently choose Venmo at online checkout. Those qualifying payments earn 3% without requiring repayment from friends.

    Better Off Elsewhere

If groceries, gas or travel take up most of your budget, the new program gives you 1% on those purchases. You lose the old system’s ability to reward your biggest category automatically.

Carrying a balance deserves particular care given the purchase APR and lack of an introductory 0% offer. And if you usually settle up through another service, such as Zelle, the split bonus requires changing that habit.

If You Already Hold the Card

You can keep the older rewards for now. A Venmo spokesperson told NerdWallet that existing cardholders will be able to retain them or choose the new program in early 2027 without another application.

How It Stacks Up Against Other Cash Back Cards

You have other options if Venmo’s fixed categories don’t match your spending. NerdWallet’s comparison listed the following rates, fees and offers at the time of writing. Use them as a starting point, since offers can change.

    CardCash backAnnual feeWelcome offer listed
Venmo Credit CardUp to 4% back on eligible dining and entertainment with a qualifying split$0No public offer reported
    Chase Freedom Unlimited1.5%-5%$0$200
American Express Blue Cash Preferred1%-6%$0 for year one, then $95Up to $300
Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards1%-6%$0$200

These ranges don’t mean you earn the highest rate on every purchase. For Venmo, reaching 4% specifically depends on the category, split and repayment requirements.

Prefer some control over your reward categories? NerdWallet also names Citi Strata and TD Cash as alternatives with category flexibility, though no rates are provided here.

    Next Steps Before You Apply

You don’t need to decide based on the 4% headline alone. A few checks can help you see whether the rewards fit how you already spend. Start with these.

    • Review three months of purchases. Compare your dining and entertainment totals with groceries, gas and travel.
    • Check your usual group. Confirm that the friends you share bills with use Venmo and can repay within the deadline.
    • Read Terms & Rates. Check the current purchase APR and applicable fees before submitting an application.
    • Plan to pay in full. Interest costs can reduce the value of your cash back.

Take your time and let your everyday purchases guide the decision. This is general information, not financial advice.

    FAQs

Do you lose the bonus if one friend never pays you back?

Yes, you miss the extra 1% if anyone included in your split fails to repay within the required 30 days. You still earn the base 3% on the eligible purchase and remain responsible for the entire card bill.

Will current cardholders be moved to the new cash back rates?

You aren’t being required to leave the old program for now. According to a Venmo spokesperson quoted by NerdWallet, you can keep it or switch in early 2027 without reapplying.

Is there a welcome offer on the Venmo card right now?

No publicly available welcome bonus was reported as of October 11, 2026. You might receive a targeted offer in the app, but that isn’t an offer available to every applicant.

Are the Venmo debit card’s 5% rewards the same as the credit card’s?

No, your debit card uses the separate Venmo Stash program. Its 5% tier requires $1,500 in qualifying monthly spending, applies at participating brands and has a $100 monthly cash back limit.

Does paying friends with the Venmo credit card cost extra?

Yes, Venmo charges 3% when you fund a payment to a friend with a credit card. Check the displayed fee before sending, since it can cancel out a 3% reward.

What are the main drawbacks of this card?

You face repayment conditions for 4%, limited rewards outside the main categories and no automatic top-spending-category bonus. The variable purchase APR, lack of introductory 0% financing and credit card-funded payment fees are other drawbacks.

How fast does Venmo cash back show up?

Under the new program, your rewards are calculated daily after purchases complete. CardRates reports that transfers to your Venmo balance generally take up to three business days, although terms allow two billing cycles. Older monthly-program accounts receive rewards after the statement period ends.
