What Is Gears of War: E-Day About?
E-Day is a prequel set 14 years before the original Gears of War. You play as Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago on Emergence Day, the moment the Locust Horde first breaks through the ground and attacks humanity.
The Coalition built the game from the ground up in Unreal Engine 5. It promises a darker, grittier tone, reimagined enemies and new creatures meant to bring back the series’ sense of horror.
Campaign, co-op and modes
You can play in several ways:
- Campaign: solo, two-player split-screen on console, or up to four players online.
- Horde Siege: a bigger take on the classic wave-survival mode. Pick a class (Assault, Marksman, Medic or Breacher), team up with other squads and fight world bosses.
- Versus: refined 4v4 PvP with new maps, plus Ranked and Social playlists.
Movement is also more modern. You can jump, vault and slide while keeping the series’ familiar cover-based combat. Xbox says the game targets 4K and up to 60 FPS across the campaign and multiplayer on a compatible display.
Performance modes on Xbox
Pure Xbox reports two modes on Xbox Series X: a 30fps Quality mode and a 60fps Performance mode. If you want the smoothest shooting, pick Performance. If you play on a big 4K TV and care most about detail, Quality is worth a try in the campaign.
Note: online co-op, Horde Siege and Versus need a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer.
Editions and Prices
You can choose from four ways to buy. Prices below come from Xbox and Gfinity’s editions guide.
| Edition | Price | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | $69.99 | Base game |
| Premium | $99.99 | Base game, early access from Oct 1, Bravo Squad weapon pack, 5 seasonal customization packs, 1,000 Iron |
| Premium Upgrade | $30 | Premium extras for Standard or Game Pass players |
| Collector’s | $299.99 | Premium content plus a 15-inch Marcus and Dom statue, SteelBook, COG tags, art print and more |
How early access works
Early access began on October 1 at 8:00 a.m. PT, giving Premium players up to five extra days with the game. You can get it in two ways:
- Buy the Premium Edition for $99.99.
- Buy the $30 Premium Upgrade on top of the Standard Edition or an active Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass plan.
Once the full game unlocks on October 6, early access no longer adds anything. At that point, the upgrade is only worth it for the weapon pack, seasonal customization packs and 1,000 Iron.
Pre-order bonus
Pre-order before October 6 at 7:59 a.m. PT to unlock the Exfil Dom character skin and the Exfil weapon skin set. Xbox says some retailers also include an Xbox gift card.
The game is part of Xbox Play Anywhere, so one digital purchase works on both Xbox and PC.
Is Gears of War: E-Day on Game Pass?
Yes, but not on every tier. According to GameSpot and Pure Xbox:
- Game Pass Ultimate: included day one (October 6).
- PC Game Pass: included day one.
- Game Pass Essential and Premium: not included at launch.
If you already pay for Ultimate or PC Game Pass, you can buy the $30 Premium Upgrade to get early access and the bonus content.
Is it on PS5 or Switch 2?
No. E-Day is available on Xbox Series X|S and PC (Windows and Steam) only. Xbox One owners can stream it through cloud gaming with Game Pass Ultimate. It is also available on GeForce NOW.
If you play on PlayStation instead, our guide to PS Plus October 2026 free games shows what you can claim this month.

Launch Extras and Partnerships
Xbox is going big on the launch with plenty outside the game itself. According to Xbox Wire:
- Launch trailer: the gameplay trailer features Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls.”

- Controllers: limited edition E-Day Xbox Wireless Controllers are available now, and a matching controller dock launches October 9.

Catch up on the series first
New to Gears? Game Pass already includes much of the series. GameSpot lists nine Gears games on Xbox consoles through Game Pass, including Gears of War: Reloaded, Gears 4 and Gears 5. On PC, five titles are available, including Gears Tactics.
Since E-Day is a prequel, you don’t need to play the others first. But the original trilogy adds weight to Marcus and Dom’s story.
How Long Is the Campaign?
Estimates vary widely depending on how you play:
- About 10 hours if you stick to the main path (The PC Enthusiast).
- 14+ hours, which The Coalition reportedly calls its longest campaign yet.
- About 16 hours on Hardcore (Pure Xbox).
- Around 25 hours with collectibles and side content (TechRadar).
The campaign is split into 5 acts and 26 chapters, plus a prologue and epilogue.
Is Gears of War: E-Day Worth It?
For most Gears fans, yes. The combat, graphics and co-op options are the strongest the series has offered. Here’s a quick way to decide:
- You have Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass: play it day one at no extra cost.
- You want to own it: the $69.99 Standard Edition is enough. Early access no longer matters after October 6.
- You’re a collector: the $299.99 Collector’s Edition is mainly about the statue and physical extras.
- You care most about story: read a few reviews first, since critics are divided.
