Here’s something most people don’t realise until it’s too late: deleting the ChatGPT app from your phone doesn’t delete your ChatGPT account. Your chats, your memories and, in some cases, your monthly subscription carry on as if nothing happened. If you want to know how to delete your ChatGPT account properly, the short answer is this: sign in on the web, open Settings, select Account, choose Delete next to Delete account, confirm with your email (or phone number) and the word DELETE, then select Permanently delete my account.

That takes about a minute. Getting it right takes a little longer.

You see, a clean exit also means saving anything you want to keep, cancelling any App Store or Google Play subscription yourself, and knowing what OpenAI keeps for up to 30 days afterwards. This guide walks you through every route (web, iPhone, Android and the Privacy Portal for when you can’t sign in), plus the gentler alternatives if you only want to stop paying or wipe your history.

ChatGPT Account Deletion at a Glance

Before we get into the steps, here are the facts that matter most, all taken from OpenAI’s own help article on deleting your ChatGPT account and its linked support pages.

    QuestionShort answer
Where do you delete it on the web?Settings, then Account, then Delete account
Where do you delete it in the apps?Settings, then Data Controls, then Delete account
Can’t sign in?Use the OpenAI Privacy Portal and verify your email or phone
Is it reversible? No. Deleted accounts can’t be reactivated
How long until data is gone?OpenAI says within 30 days, with limited legal or security exceptions
Does it cancel ChatGPT Plus?Only if you’re billed directly by OpenAI. Apple and Google Play subscriptions must be cancelled separately
Does it affect the API?Yes. The same account loses access to ChatGPT and the API Platform
Can you reuse your email?OpenAI’s main article says yes, after 30 days, if the account was fully deleted
Work or school account?Self-service deletion isn’t available. Ask your organisation’s admin

The key takeaway here is simple: deletion is quick, permanent and only covers what’s billed and stored by OpenAI itself. Everything else is on you to tidy up first.

What Deleting Your ChatGPT Account Actually Does

Let’s back up a little. What does “delete” really mean here?

According to OpenAI, deleting your account prevents you from using it to access OpenAI services, including ChatGPT and the API. In plain terms, one login opens both doors, so closing it closes both. If you ever created an API key on platform.openai.com with the same account, that access goes too.

Next, your data. OpenAI states it will delete your data within 30 days, but it may retain a limited set of data for longer where required or permitted by law. That’s a common clause in privacy policies, and it’s worth reading as written rather than as “everything vanishes instantly.” It doesn’t.

Then there’s the finality. OpenAI is blunt about it: deleted accounts can’t be reactivated. There’s no grace period button, no undo email and no support ticket that brings it back. Some third-party guides talk about a 30-day “recovery window,” but OpenAI’s current help article doesn’t describe one. The 30 days refers to data removal and email reuse, not to getting your old account back.

“Deleting the app is like leaving the room. Deleting the account is like moving out.”

So if you’re on the fence, slow down. The next section might save you from doing something you can’t reverse.

    What goes with your account

When the deletion goes through, you lose access to all of the following tied to that login:

    • Chat history: every saved and archived conversation in your sidebar and Settings.
    • Memory and personalisation: saved memories and the context ChatGPT built up from past chats.
    • Shared conversation links: OpenAI says these are deleted when their creator deletes the account.
    • Subscriptions billed by OpenAI: paid plans you bought on the web are cancelled.
    • API Platform access: any API keys and projects under that same account.

    What doesn’t automatically go away

    • Apple App Store or Google Play subscriptions: OpenAI says deletion does not cancel an Apple subscription, and you should cancel mobile subscriptions before you delete.
    • Copies other people saved: if someone already saved a conversation you shared, deleting your link stops future access but doesn’t reach into their account.
    • Ad campaigns: if you run ads through OpenAI’s Ads Manager with the same email, active campaigns may keep serving and accruing charges.
    • The app on your phone: you still need to uninstall it yourself if you don’t want it there.

Do You Really Need to Delete It? Five Gentler Options

Here’s the thing. A lot of people search for how to delete their ChatGPT account when what they actually want is narrower: stop paying, clean up an embarrassing chat, or stop their conversations feeding model training. OpenAI’s own help article opens by pointing to these alternatives, and they’re worth a look.

What you wantBetter option than deletingWhere to find it
Stop payingCancel your subscriptionSettings, then Billing (web), or your App Store / Google Play subscriptions
Remove one conversationDelete that chatThe ••• menu next to the chat
Wipe all conversationsDelete all chatsSettings, then Data controls, then Delete all chats
Hide chats without losing themArchiveThe ••• menu, or Archive all chats in Data controls
Stop training on your chatsTurn off Improve the model for everyoneSettings, then Data controls
Have a one-off private chatUse Temporary ChatSelect Temporary when you open a new chat
Change the email you sign in withUpdate your emailOpenAI’s change-email instructions
Forget specific detailsDelete saved memoriesSettings, then Personalization

Sounds like a lot of options, right? It boils down to one question: do you want to stop using ChatGPT entirely, or do you want ChatGPT to stop doing something specific?

If it’s the second, you can keep your account, your useful chats and your custom setup while fixing the actual problem. If it’s the first, read on.

The key takeaway here is simple: delete your account only when you’re done with ChatGPT and the API for good under that login.

    Your Pre-Deletion Checklist

Five minutes of preparation saves you a lot of regret. Work through these in order before you press the final button.

    1. Export the conversations you want to keep

Once your account is gone, so are your chats. OpenAI won’t restore them, even through support.

To export, sign in, open Settings, select Data controls, choose Export, then Confirm export. OpenAI’s export help article says exports can take up to 7 days to arrive, and the download link expires 24 hours after you receive it. The ZIP file includes your chat history and other relevant account data.

That timing matters more than you’d think. If you request an export and delete your account the same afternoon, you may never receive the file. Request it, wait for the email, download and open it, check that the chats you care about are inside, and only then delete.

Can’t sign in? The Privacy Portal also offers a Download my data request for consumer ChatGPT accounts.

    2. Cancel any App Store or Google Play subscription

This is the step people skip most often, and it’s the one that costs money.

If you subscribed to ChatGPT Plus (or another paid plan) through the iPhone app, Apple bills you, not OpenAI. Deleting your OpenAI account does not cancel that Apple subscription. The same logic applies to Google Play on Android. OpenAI’s cancellation guide also notes that uninstalling the ChatGPT app does not cancel your subscription.

We’ll walk through exact cancellation steps for each platform later in this guide. For now, the rule is: cancel first, delete second.

    3. Check whether your email runs an OpenAI Ads account

This one is newer and almost no competitor guide mentions it. OpenAI’s help article now warns that if the email on your OpenAI account is also used for an Ads account, deleting your account may stop you accessing or managing that Ads account. Worse, active campaigns may not pause, and could keep serving and accruing charges.

If that applies to you, pause or end campaigns in Ads Manager, make sure another authorised user can access the Ads account, and contact OpenAI Support first if you’re the only person with access.

    4. Delete shared links and scheduled task links

If you ever used the Share button, there may be public links to your conversations floating around (they start with chatgpt.com/share/). OpenAI says shared conversation links are deleted when their creator deletes the account, which is reassuring.

Scheduled task links are different. OpenAI advises deleting any shared task links from Data controls before deleting your account. You can manage all of them under Settings, then Data controls, then Shared links, then Manage, where you can delete links one at a time or choose Delete all shared links.

    5. Note anything you rely on through the API

If you’re a developer or you’ve connected tools to the OpenAI API with this account, those keys stop working once the account is deleted. Migrate projects to another account or organisation first. That’s especially important if a team or client app is quietly calling your key.

    6. Decide what to do about your phone number

Phone verification isn’t required to create an OpenAI account, but it is required to generate your first API key. OpenAI says a phone number can verify the first API key for up to three accounts, and deleting an account does not reset that limit. If you plan to come back later as a developer, keep that in mind.

    7. Sign in fresh right before you delete

This is a small practical tip. A Stack Exchange user who couldn’t get the delete button to unlock posted the response they received from OpenAI’s support assistant: you need to enter both your account email and the word DELETE, and you need to have signed in within roughly the last 10 minutes. If you’ve had ChatGPT open in a tab for days, sign out and back in first.

How to Delete Your ChatGPT Account on the Web

The web is the most reliable route, and it works on any computer or phone browser. Here are the exact steps from OpenAI’s current help article:

    1. Go to chatgpt.com and sign in to the account you want to delete.
    2. Open your account menu (your profile name or picture) and select Settings.
    3. Select Account.
    4. Next to Delete account, select Delete.
    5. Enter your account email or phone number, and type DELETE when prompted.
    6. Select Permanently delete my account.

That’s it. You’ll be signed out, and the account can no longer be used for ChatGPT or the API.

Notice what isn’t in those steps: an “are you really sure?” cooling-off period. The confirmation dialog is your one chance to back out. If you’re unsure, close it.

What if you don’t see Delete account?

Let’s break it down. There are three common reasons:

    • You’re in a work or school workspace: self-service deletion isn’t available in ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. Switch to your personal account, or contact your organisation.
    • You’re looking under the wrong tab: on the web the option lives under Account, while in the mobile apps it’s under Data Controls.
    • You’re in an old browser session: refresh the page or sign out and back in.

The key takeaway here is simple: on the web, Account is the tab you want, and the confirmation needs your email or phone plus the word DELETE.

How to Delete Your ChatGPT Account on iPhone or iPad

Prefer to do it from your phone? You can, and it’s just as quick. OpenAI’s iOS deletion article gives these steps:

    1. Open the ChatGPT app and make sure you’re signed in.
    2. Open your account settings from the profile menu.
    3. Tap Data Controls.
    4. Tap Delete Account.
    5. Confirm the deletion, or tap Cancel to stop.

Here’s the catch. The iOS app makes deleting your OpenAI account easy, but it doesn’t touch your Apple subscription. If you paid for ChatGPT Plus through the App Store, cancel it in iOS Settings first (we cover the steps below). Otherwise Apple keeps billing you for a plan attached to an account that no longer exists.

Then, once the account is gone, press and hold the ChatGPT icon and remove the app. Deleting the app alone does nothing to your account, but deleting it after the account means you won’t get confused by a login screen later.

How to Delete Your ChatGPT Account on Android

On Android, OpenAI’s help article describes the route as: tap your profile icon, go to Data Controls, then choose Delete OpenAI account and confirm.

The same warning applies. If you subscribed through Google Play, that subscription lives with Google. Cancel it in the Play Store before you delete, or you’ll keep getting charged.

One more Android tip: the official app is published by OpenAI on Google Play. If you’ve installed a lookalike “AI chat” app that just uses OpenAI’s models, deleting your OpenAI account won’t touch that app’s account or its subscription. You’ll need to cancel and delete that separately through its own settings.

How to Delete Your ChatGPT Account Without Logging In

What if you can’t sign in at all? Maybe you lost access to the email, forgot which Google account you used, or the password reset keeps failing.

That’s what the OpenAI Privacy Portal is for. OpenAI’s steps are:

    1. Go to privacy.openai.com.
    2. Select Make a Privacy Request.
    3. Select I have a consumer ChatGPT account.
    4. Select Delete my ChatGPT account, then follow the verification steps.

You must be able to verify the email address or phone number already linked to your account. If you can’t access either, or you have a deactivated phone-only account that can’t complete verification, OpenAI says to contact Support for an ownership review.

Fast forward to the end of the process, and the result is the same as deleting in Settings: the account is closed and data deletion is scheduled.

The Privacy Portal is also where you can ask OpenAI to download your data or stop training on your content, which makes it a useful page to bookmark even if you never delete anything.

Work, School and Enterprise ChatGPT Accounts

Let’s back up a little, because this trips up a lot of people.

If your ChatGPT access comes through your employer or university, you’re probably signed in to a ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace. OpenAI says self-service account deletion isn’t available in Business, Enterprise, Edu or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces. Your organisation manages those accounts, so you’ll need to ask your IT team or workspace admin.

There’s a related wrinkle. OpenAI won’t reactivate email addresses that were previously associated with an Enterprise organisation. So if your work email was once part of an Enterprise workspace, don’t assume you can spin up a fresh personal account on it later.

Two more things are worth knowing:

    • Training: by default, OpenAI says it doesn’t use content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare or API Platform workspaces to train its models.
    • Exports: data export from Settings is available for Free, Go, Plus and Pro accounts and eligible Edu workspaces, but not for Business, Enterprise or Healthcare workspaces.

If you have both a personal and a work workspace, check which one you’re in before you look for the delete button. It’s an easy mix-up.

What Happens to Your Data After You Delete ChatGPT

This is where most guides wave their hands. “Your data is deleted.” Sounds simple, right? Not quite.

OpenAI stores different kinds of information in different places, and each has its own rules. Here’s how they line up, based on OpenAI’s help pages.

    Data typeWhat OpenAI says happens
Saved chatsDeleted within 30 days of account deletion, with limited legal or security exceptions
Deleted chatsPermanently removed within 30 days unless already de-identified or kept for security or legal reasons
Archived chatsFollow the same retention rules as other saved chats
Saved memoriesStored separately from chats; deleting a chat doesn’t necessarily delete a memory made from it
Logs of deleted memoriesMay be kept for up to 30 days for safety and debugging
Temporary chatsKept for up to 30 days for safety purposes
Shared conversation linksDeleted when the creator deletes the account
Copies others savedNot affected by your deletion
Content already used for trainingNot covered by deletion (see below)

    Deleted and archived chats

OpenAI says deleted chats are permanently removed from its systems within 30 days, unless they were already de-identified and disassociated from your account, or must be kept for security or legal reasons. You can’t recover a deleted chat, either in ChatGPT or through support.

Archived chats are a bit of a trap if you think of them as “hidden, so gone.” They’re not. OpenAI is clear that archiving doesn’t change a chat’s retention period. It only removes the chat from your sidebar.

    Memory

Memory is the part people forget. ChatGPT can hold saved memories (details you asked it to remember, or that it saved as useful context) and can also reference your chat history to personalise answers.

According to OpenAI’s Memory help article, saved memories are stored separately from chat history. Deleting a chat alone doesn’t necessarily delete a saved memory created from that chat. If you’re keeping your account but cleaning house, you may need to clear memories, chats, Library files and connected apps separately.

If you turn off Reference chat history, OpenAI says remembered information is scheduled for deletion within 30 days. When you delete the whole account, the account-level 30-day deletion covers everything tied to it.

    Files in your Library

OpenAI’s chat-management article notes that files in your Library are separate from chats and need to be deleted individually. If you’re keeping your account and just tidying up, don’t forget them. If you’re deleting the account, they go with it under the standard data deletion.

What deletion can’t reach: model training

Here’s the thing nobody likes to hear. If your conversations were eligible for model training before you opted out or deleted your account, deleting your account doesn’t pull that learning back out of models that were already trained.

OpenAI says that for personal ChatGPT accounts, eligible content may be used to improve its models depending on your settings, and that it takes steps to reduce personal information in training datasets. When you opt out, it won’t use your new conversations to improve its models. Notice the word new.

“Deleting your account stops what happens next. It can’t rewrite what already happened.”

So if training is your main concern, turn off model improvement today, whether or not you delete your account.

Can You Reuse Your Email Address or Phone Number?

This is one of the most searched follow-up questions, and OpenAI’s own pages don’t fully agree with each other.

OpenAI’s main deletion article, updated recently, says yes: you can create a new account with the same email address after 30 days, provided the old account was fully deleted and not deactivated. But the iOS-specific article still warns that you can’t reuse the same email address afterwards. The Android FAQ makes a similar claim.

So which is right? The main help article is the most recently updated and most detailed, so it’s the best guide. Still, if keeping that exact email matters to you, assume there’s some risk and consider using a different address for your next account, or keep your current account and just clear the data.

    IdentifierWhat OpenAI’s main article says
Email addressReusable after 30 days if the account was fully deleted
Email tied to an Enterprise organisationCan’t be reactivated
Email on an account disabled for policy violationsCan’t be reactivated
Phone number (ChatGPT sign-up)Usually re-usable; removed from OpenAI’s system 30 days after permanent deletion, with some exceptions
Phone number (API verification)Can verify the first API key for up to three accounts; deletion doesn’t reset the count

Can you change how you sign in instead?

Some people delete their account because they signed up with Google, Apple or Microsoft and want a password login instead. OpenAI says deletion doesn’t let you change your sign-in method. Instead, you may be able to add a password: open Settings, select Security and login, and if Password shows Add, select it and follow the steps.

That’s a much less drastic fix.

How to Cancel ChatGPT Plus Without Deleting Your Account

If money is the real problem, you don’t need to delete anything. You just need to cancel the subscription in the right place, because where you cancel depends on where you subscribed.

Cancel on the web (billed by OpenAI)

    1. Sign in at chatgpt.com.
    2. Open your account menu and select Settings.
    3. Select Billing.
    4. Under Cancel plan, select Cancel.

Cancel on iPhone or iPad (billed by Apple)

    1. Open the iPhone Settings app (not the ChatGPT app).
    2. Tap your name at the top.
    3. Tap Subscriptions.
    4. Tap ChatGPT.
    5. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Cancel on Android (billed by Google Play)

    1. Open the Google Play Store app.
    2. Open Subscriptions from your profile menu.
    3. Select ChatGPT.
    4. Tap Cancel subscription and confirm.

You can also do it on the web: go to your Google Play subscriptions page, sign in, select Manage next to ChatGPT, then Cancel subscription.

    The timing and refund rules

OpenAI’s cancellation article spells out three rules worth remembering:

    • Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal: that avoids being charged for the next billing period.
    • You keep paid features until the period ends: cancelling doesn’t cut you off immediately.
    • Cancelling isn’t a refund: it stops future renewals but doesn’t automatically refund past charges. Refund requests go to OpenAI Support, or to Apple or Google if they billed you.

Here’s a practical example. Say your Plus plan renews on the 15th. Cancel on the 13th, and you keep paid features until the 15th with no new charge. Cancel on the 15th itself, and you risk paying for another month.

The key takeaway here is simple: cancel where you paid, and give yourself at least a day’s buffer.

How to Clear ChatGPT History Instead of Deleting Your Account

Maybe you like ChatGPT, but your sidebar is full of things you’d rather not keep. Clearing your history is the middle ground, and it’s quick.

    Delete a single chat

    1. Find the chat in your sidebar.
    2. Select the ••• menu next to it.
    3. Select Delete and confirm.

On Android, you can also open the chat, tap the three vertical dots, then tap Delete.

    Delete all chats at once

    1. Open Settings.
    2. Select Data controls.
    3. Select Delete all chats and confirm.

OpenAI warns that Delete all chats can’t be undone, and that it affects every chat in your current account or workspace. If you have a work workspace too, check which one you’re in.

    Archive instead of deleting

Archiving is the “out of sight, not out of mind” option. Select the ••• menu next to a chat and choose Archive, or use Archive all chats in Data controls. You can find archived chats later under Settings, then Data controls, then Archived chats, where you can unarchive or delete them.

Remember the catch from earlier: archived chats stay searchable and follow the same retention rules as any saved chat. Archiving isn’t a privacy tool. It’s a tidiness tool.

Use Temporary Chat for sensitive questions

Here’s a habit worth building. If you’re about to ask something you don’t want in your history, start a Temporary Chat. Open a new chat, select Temporary, choose Personalized or Unpersonalized, then type your message.

According to OpenAI, a temporary chat stays out of your chat history, doesn’t create or update memories, and isn’t used to improve models while it stays temporary. OpenAI may keep it for up to 30 days for safety purposes. If you save it, it becomes a normal chat with your normal settings.

How to Stop ChatGPT Training on Your Conversations

If your worry is less “I want to leave” and more “I don’t want my chats used to train AI,” there’s a direct switch for that. OpenAI’s data usage article lists two equivalent methods:

    • In ChatGPT: open Settings, then Data controls, and turn off Improve the model for everyone.
    • In the Privacy Portal: submit a Do not train on my content request.

There’s one caveat that catches people out. If you give feedback with the thumbs up or thumbs down buttons, OpenAI says the entire conversation tied to that feedback may be used for training, even if you’ve opted out. If you care about training, skip the rating buttons on sensitive chats.

Once you’ve opted out, OpenAI says it won’t use your new conversations to improve its models. Combine that with Temporary Chat for anything sensitive, and you’ve covered most of what account deletion would have achieved, while keeping your useful history.

Troubleshooting: When ChatGPT Won’t Let You Delete Your Account

Sometimes the delete flow simply doesn’t cooperate. Here are the problems people report most, and what to do about each.

The Permanently delete button stays locked

This is the most common complaint. A user on Web Applications Stack Exchange described typing DELETE and seeing the button stay locked. The fix that answer reports from OpenAI’s support assistant: enter your account email or phone number as well as the word DELETE, and make sure you signed in recently (roughly within the last 10 minutes). Sign out, sign back in, and try again immediately.

If it still won’t unlock, use the Privacy Portal route instead.

You see “You do not have an account because it has been deleted or deactivated”

OpenAI explains that this means the account linked to your email was deleted or deactivated. If you deleted it, it can’t be restored. If you didn’t, check your inbox for messages about deactivation, age verification or a policy issue. OpenAI adds that waiting 30 days does not reactivate a deactivated account.

There’s no Delete account option at all

Check which workspace you’re in. Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces don’t offer self-service deletion. Switch to your personal workspace or ask your admin.

You deleted the app, but the account still works

That’s expected. Uninstalling the app doesn’t delete the account or cancel subscriptions. Sign in on the web or in the app and use the steps above.

You’re still being charged after deletion

Almost always, this means the subscription was billed through Apple or Google Play. Cancel it in your device’s subscription settings, then contact Apple or Google about any refund. OpenAI can’t cancel a subscription it doesn’t bill.

You can’t verify your email or phone in the Privacy Portal

OpenAI says that if you can’t access the email or phone linked to your account, or a deactivated phone-only account can’t complete verification, you should contact OpenAI Support for an ownership review.

Mistakes to Avoid When You Delete ChatGPT

You’d be surprised how often a two-minute task turns into a week of regret. These are the slip-ups to watch for.

    1. Don’t delete before your export arrives

Exports can take up to 7 days and the link lasts 24 hours. Delete too early and you may never get the file.

    2. Don’t assume deletion cancels every subscription

It cancels plans billed directly by OpenAI. Apple and Google Play subscriptions keep running until you cancel them yourself.

    3. Don’t forget the API

The same account powers the API Platform. If a side project or client tool uses your key, it breaks the moment you delete.

    4. Don’t confuse archiving with deleting

Archived chats keep the same retention period as any saved chat. They’re just hidden from the sidebar.

    5. Don’t count on getting your old account back

OpenAI says deleted accounts can’t be reactivated. Treat the confirmation screen as final.

    6. Don’t ignore your Ads account

If your email also runs an OpenAI Ads account, pause campaigns and hand over access first. Active campaigns may keep charging.

    7. Don’t delete just to change your login method

Deletion doesn’t let you change how you sign in. Adding a password under Security and login is the smarter fix.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Still deciding? This quick decision table matches common situations with the move that makes the most sense.

    Your situationBest move
You’re done with ChatGPT and never use the APIExport, cancel mobile billing, then delete your account
You just want to stop payingCancel your subscription where you bought it
You want a fresh start but like ChatGPTDelete all chats and clear saved memories
You’re worried about AI trainingTurn off Improve the model for everyone and use Temporary Chat
You can’t sign in anymoreUse the Privacy Portal deletion request
It’s a work or school accountContact your workspace admin
You think your account was hackedChange your password and sign out of other devices first, then decide
You want to switch to another AI assistantExport first, then delete or simply cancel

That last row is worth a moment. If you’re leaving because another assistant suits you better, you don’t have to burn the bridge immediately. Cancel your plan, try the alternative for a month, and delete once you’re sure. Our Grok vs ChatGPT comparison and our guides to Claude Sonnet 5.5 and Gemini 4 Argon can help you weigh the options.

Should You Delete Your ChatGPT Account?

There’s no single right answer, but there are good reasons on both sides.

Deleting makes sense if you’ve stopped using ChatGPT, you want the fewest possible copies of your personal data out there, or you’re consolidating accounts. Fewer accounts mean fewer logins to protect, which is a real security benefit. Data breaches happen across every industry, as our coverage of the Oracle Health data breach shows, and an account you don’t have can’t be exposed.

Keeping it makes sense if you still use ChatGPT even occasionally, rely on the API, or mainly want more privacy rather than a clean break. The privacy controls (opt out of training, Temporary Chat, delete all chats, clear memories) get you most of the way there without losing access.

It also helps to understand where ChatGPT is heading before you decide. OpenAI keeps adding features, from voice access (remember when you could first call ChatGPT from your phone?) to the developer tools announced at OpenAI DevDay 2026. If one of those is the reason you signed up, cancelling or pausing may be wiser than deleting.

“Delete when you’re done. Clean up when you’re not sure.”

And if you suspect someone else got into your account, deal with the security issue first. Change your password, review your devices, and check your phone for signs of compromise with our guide on how to know if your phone is hacked. Deleting a hijacked account in a panic can destroy the evidence you need to understand what happened.

How to Confirm Your ChatGPT Account Is Really Deleted

How do you know it actually worked? There’s no public status page, but you can check a few things:

    1. Try signing in: you should see an error saying the account doesn’t exist because it was deleted or deactivated.
    2. Check your inbox: keep any confirmation message from OpenAI or the Privacy Portal for your records.
    3. Check your bank or card statement: after your next billing date, make sure there’s no new ChatGPT charge.
    4. Check Apple or Google subscriptions: confirm ChatGPT appears as cancelled or expired.
    5. Test your API keys: if you had any, they should no longer work.
    6. Mark your calendar for 30 days: that’s when OpenAI says data deletion should be complete and your email can be reused.

If you used the Privacy Portal, keep the request confirmation. It’s your proof that you asked, and when.

How to Delete ChatGPT Account FAQ

Does deleting my ChatGPT account erase everything?

Not instantly. OpenAI says it deletes your data within 30 days, but it may keep a limited set of data for longer where required or permitted by law. Content that was already used to train models before you opted out isn’t pulled back out of those models, and conversations other people saved from your shared links stay in their accounts.

Why won’t ChatGPT let me delete my account?

The most common reasons are a locked confirmation button, being in a work or school workspace, or an old sign-in session. Enter your email or phone number plus the word DELETE, sign out and back in so your session is fresh, and confirm you’re in your personal workspace. If it still fails, submit a deletion request through the OpenAI Privacy Portal.

How do I remove my data from ChatGPT without closing my account?

Open Settings, then Data controls. From there you can delete all chats, turn off Improve the model for everyone, and manage shared links. Then visit Personalization to clear saved memories, and delete any Library files you uploaded.

Can I get my ChatGPT account back after deleting it?

No. OpenAI says deleted accounts can’t be reactivated. You can create a new account, and OpenAI’s main help article says you can reuse the same email after 30 days if the old account was fully deleted, but your old chats and settings won’t come back.

Will deleting my account stop my ChatGPT Plus charges?

It cancels plans billed directly by OpenAI. If you subscribed through the Apple App Store or Google Play, you must cancel there yourself, because deleting your OpenAI account doesn’t cancel those subscriptions.

Is it possible to delete a ChatGPT account from an iPhone?

Yes. Open the ChatGPT app, go to your settings, tap Data Controls, then Delete Account and confirm. Cancel any App Store subscription in the iPhone Settings app first.

How long does it take OpenAI to delete my data?

OpenAI says it deletes account data within 30 days of deletion, except for a limited set it may keep longer for legal reasons. Losing access to your account happens as soon as you confirm.

Does deleting the ChatGPT app delete my account?

No. Uninstalling the app only removes it from your device. Your account, chats and any subscription stay active until you delete the account itself and cancel billing.

    Leaving ChatGPT the Smart Way

Deleting your ChatGPT account takes about a minute. Doing it well takes a little planning: export what matters, cancel any Apple or Google Play subscription, check your API keys and Ads account, then delete from Settings or the Privacy Portal.

And if you’re not ready to walk away completely, that’s fine too. Cancelling your plan, wiping your history, switching off training and using Temporary Chat give you most of the privacy benefits while keeping the door open.

Whichever path you choose, you’re now making the decision with the full picture. If you do decide to stay and get more out of the tool, our guide to using ChatGPT to make money is a good place to start your next chapter.
