For the first time since Ghosts landed on the Wii U back in 2013, a brand-new Call of Duty is about to boot up on Nintendo hardware. Modern Warfare 4 launches on Friday, October 23, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2, and digital pre-order buyers can start the campaign a full week early on October 16. Prices start at $69.99, and here’s the twist: it isn’t coming to Game Pass on day one.

Let’s break it down: when it unlocks where you live, what each edition gets you, and which one is worth your money.

When Does Modern Warfare 4 Come Out?

Is Modern Warfare 4 really coming out this month? Yes. October 23, 2026 is locked in across every platform, and Activision confirmed it as the 2026 Call of Duty when it revealed the game on May 28.

The date is simple. The hour is where it gets fuzzy.

Here’s the catch. Activision’s own PC tech and specs post on callofduty.com says “the full game releases on October 23 at midnight local time.” Meanwhile, the PlayStation Store listing shows 04:00 AM UTC, and Insider Gaming reports a single global unlock that lines up with that UTC time. If the global unlock holds, here’s when you can jump in:

    Time zoneReported unlock time
    Pacific (PT)9:00 PM, October 22
    Central (CT)11:00 PM, October 22
    Eastern (ET)12:00 AM, October 23
    UK (BST)5:00 AM, October 23
Central Europe (CEST)6:00 AM, October 23
    India (IST)9:30 AM, October 23
Korea and Japan (KST/JST)1:00 PM, October 23
Australia East (AET)3:00 PM, October 23
New Zealand (NZST)5:00 PM, October 23

Why does this matter to you? On the US West Coast, a global launch means playing Thursday night instead of Friday. If Activision sticks with midnight local, everyone starts at their own midnight. The key takeaway here is simple: plan for the Thursday evening unlock in the US, but keep an eye on your platform store in the final days.

Preload and campaign early access dates

On PC, preloading begins October 15 at 9 AM PT across Steam, Battle.net and the Xbox app. One day later, on Friday, October 16, anyone who digitally pre-ordered the Standard or Vault Edition gets the full campaign early.

That’s seven days with the story before multiplayer and DMZ open up, on every platform including Switch 2. Activision hasn’t published an exact unlock hour for the October 16 campaign drop yet.

Modern Warfare 4 Price and Editions Compared

There are two editions on the official page: Standard and Vault. No Deluxe, no Ultimate, no confusing middle tier. On the US PlayStation Store, Standard costs $69.99 and Vault costs $99.99.

    What you getStandard ($69.99)Vault ($99.99)
    Full gameYesYes
Campaign early access (Oct 16, digital)YesYes
    Hunter Killer Operator skin (pre-order)YesYes
    Hostile Alliance Operator PackNoYes
    Special Forces Operator PackNoYes
    Signature Weapon CollectionNoYes
    BlackCell (1 season)NoYes
    DMZ Deployment BonusNoYes

There’s also a loyalty perk. If you own a previous Call of Duty, you can get 10% off the Vault Edition when you pre-order, which drops it to roughly $90. On Xbox, digital pre-orders also come with a 25th Anniversary Inner Circuit weapon blueprint and a $5 Xbox gift card.

The key takeaway: the $30 gap is cosmetics, a battle pass and a DMZ head start.

Which Modern Warfare 4 Edition Should You Buy?

That $30 gap is easy to justify on a pre-order page, and just as easy to regret. Here’s how to decide.

    1. Buy Standard if you mostly play the campaign

If you’re here for the story, Vault adds nothing to the campaign. Standard digital still includes the October 16 early access. Save the $30.

    2. Go Vault if you’ll grind seasons

BlackCell is the premium battle pass tier, and you get one season of it. If you’d buy BlackCell anyway, the Vault Edition starts to look like a bundle deal rather than a cosmetic splurge.

    3. Check your loyalty discount first

Own an older Call of Duty on the same account? That 10% off could narrow the gap to around $20. Sign in before you buy and see whether it applies.

    4. Pre-order digitally if early access matters

Campaign early access is tied to digital pre-orders and pre-purchases. A physical launch-day copy won’t get you that extra week.

    5. Watch for sale prices on Standard

If you’re browsing Prime Big Deal Days 2026 tech deals, look for Standard Edition discounts, but remember a physical copy skips early access.

“Thirty extra dollars buys you looks and a battle pass, not a better game.”

    Game Pass vs Buying Outright

Here’s the thing. For the last couple of years, Xbox players got used to Call of Duty landing on Game Pass on day one. Not this time.

The official Xbox store page states that Modern Warfare 4 is “not available with Game Pass at Launch.” GameSpot describes it as Call of Duty “returning to its premium roots.” Wikipedia’s entry, citing reporting, says it will reach Game Pass at least a year after launch, though Activision hasn’t put a date on that publicly.

So what does that mean for you? If you want to play in October, you’re paying full price, and you’ll still need a subscription for online play: Game Pass Essential on Xbox, PS Plus on PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch Online on Switch 2. The key takeaway here is simple: don’t hold off waiting for a subscription drop unless you’re comfortable waiting a long time.

If you need a backlog filler in the meantime, Xbox players already have Gears of War: E-Day, which launched on October 6, and PS5 owners can check what’s included in PS Plus for October 2026.

    Story, Setting and Game Modes

Wondering what year the game is set in? It’s present day. The official description puts it plainly: “War erupts on the Korean Peninsula as North Korea launches a full-scale invasion that threatens to destabilize the world.”

You’ll split time between two leads. Private Park Hyun Jun, played by Young Mazino, is a South Korean recruit defending his homeland. Captain John Price, played by Barry Sloane, is now a fugitive leading Task Force 141. Mads Mikkelsen plays a villain known as “the Archer,” and missions reportedly stretch to New York City, Paris and Mumbai.

Fast forward to the modes. You get three at launch:

    • Campaign: The Korean Peninsula story, playable a week early with a digital pre-order.
    • Multiplayer: 12 new 6v6 maps at launch, plus a map called Kill Block that Wikipedia reports has over 500 configurations.
    • DMZ: The extraction mode returns, with squads dropping into an exclusion zone, looting, completing objectives and getting out alive.

Is there Zombies? The official page lists Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ only, so don’t expect a round-based Zombies mode in this one.

There’s also a new aiming system called Ballistic Authority. The pitch from callofduty.com is short:

“No bloom, no guesswork, no doubt.”

In practice, that means hipfire bloom is gone, so your shots go where your reticle points.

    What’s Changed Since the Beta

Let’s back up a little. The beta ran across two weekends: early access from August 21 to 25 for pre-order holders, then an open beta from August 28 to September 1 for everyone, Switch 2 included. It was the first Call of Duty beta to include a campaign mission and a Warzone map.

Before the second weekend, its patch notes moved Tactical Sprint into the Blood Rush perk, cut slide distance by 10% and slide speed by 9%, increased every killstreak cost by 1 and reduced aim assist, according to MP1st.

More changes are headed to launch. In its Ward Room: Road to Launch episode, reported by NoobFeed on September 28, the studio said:

    • Time to kill: Launch tuning will sit closer to the second beta weekend, with outliers pulled back.
    • SMGs: Buffed across the board, since they weren’t performing in their intended ranges.
    • Aim assist: Balanced toward roughly a 50/50 win rate between controller and mouse-and-keyboard players at similar skill.
    • Spawns: More coverage and players kept closer to objectives like Hardpoint.
    • XP tokens: Will count down in in-game time, not real-world time.

The key takeaway here is simple: if the beta felt too twitchy, the launch build is meant to feel slower and more grounded.

Nintendo Switch 2 Version: What to Expect

Modern Warfare 4 is the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo console in over a decade, and Activision isn’t treating it as a side project.

The Switch 2 version supports Joy-Con 2 mouse controls, gyro aiming, the Switch 2 Pro Controller, HDR and handheld play. You also get full cross-play and cross-progression, so your Switch 2 squad can party up with friends on PS5, Xbox and PC.

What’s still missing? Activision hasn’t shared resolution, frame rate or download size for Switch 2. Pre-orders opened August 26 on the Nintendo eShop and at retailers, but Switch 2 pricing wasn’t listed in Activision’s announcement.

PC Specs for Modern Warfare 4

PC players should check two things before preload: storage and security settings. Every tier needs a 115 GB SSD, and TPM 2.0 plus Secure Boot are required.

Minimum runs on Windows 10; higher tiers list Windows 11. You also get DLSS 4.5, FSR Redstone and XeSS 3, ray tracing across all three modes, and a built-in benchmark tool. The key takeaway here is simple: an RTX 3060 Ti-class card is the sweet spot for smooth 90 fps play.

    Ready for October 23?

Modern Warfare 4 feels like Infinity Ward planting a flag: premium again, on more hardware than ever, and already reshaped around beta feedback.

Pick an edition, pre-order digitally for the October 16 campaign, clear 115 GB on PC before October 15, and set a Thursday night alarm if you’re in the US. If you’re also eyeing other big releases this fall, like Control Resonant, you’ve got a busy few weeks ahead.

See you on the Korean Peninsula.
