Ask ChatGPT to sketch a cozy living room, and pretty soon you might see a furniture brand’s picture sitting right next to it. That’s the latest twist in chatgpt ads: on October 5, OpenAI announced a visual ad format that appears alongside image-generation results, with a US test starting later this month for Free and Go users. If you pay for Plus or Pro, nothing changes for you. If you don’t, here’s what’s coming, what OpenAI can and can’t see, and how to keep ads to a minimum.

The new format arrives as ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people every week, according to OpenAI’s announcement. That’s a huge audience for a product that, until this year, never showed a single sponsored link.

What the new chatgpt ads format actually looks like

Until now, ads in ChatGPT have mostly been text-based sponsored product recommendations and listings that sit at the bottom of an answer. The new format leans on pictures instead. OpenAI says the visual ads use images to show product inspiration, how a product is used, or the experiences it makes possible.

Why does that matter to you? Image generation is one of the most popular things people do in ChatGPT, and it’s a natural moment for shopping ideas. Picture asking for a mock-up of a backyard patio and seeing a sponsored outdoor-furniture image beside your render. OpenAI says the ads are clearly labeled and kept separate from the generated image itself, so your picture won’t have a logo sneaked into it.

Here’s the thing. The test is small at first. TechCrunch reports the ads come from an initial test group of advertisers and that the rollout is US-only for now, with no global timeline given.

The key takeaway here is simple: if you make images on a free or Go account in the US, expect to start seeing labeled product pictures nearby.

A quick timeline of ads in ChatGPT

Let’s back up a little. Ads didn’t arrive overnight. OpenAI laid out its plans in January, started a US test in February, opened self-serve buying in May and has expanded country by country since then. Here’s how the year has unfolded.

    Date (2026)What happened
January 16OpenAI publishes its advertising principles and confirms an $8 per month Go plan in the US
February 9Ad testing begins in the United States for Free and Go users
May 5Beta self-serve Ads Manager opens to US advertisers, with CPC bidding added
AugustAds expand to India, per TechCrunch
October 5Visual ads for image generation and new measurement tools announced
Later in OctoberUS test of visual ads begins

In its January post on advertising, OpenAI promised answer independence, conversation privacy, user choice and that it would not optimize for time spent. Those promises are the yardstick you can hold every new format against.

That push for revenue isn’t random. If you’ve followed our breakdown of ChatGPT’s finances, you know running these models is expensive, and even paid tiers haven’t always covered costs, as we saw when OpenAI admitted it was losing money on ChatGPT Pro. Ads are how OpenAI pays for the free tier at this scale.

Which ChatGPT plans show ads and which stay ad-free

This is the question most people actually care about. According to OpenAI’s help center article on ads in ChatGPT, ads may appear for Free and Go users. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts don’t get ads.

    PlanUS priceAds?Notes

PlusCheck pricing pageNoCheapest individual ad-free paid plan
    ProCheck pricing pageNoAd-free, highest limits
Business, Enterprise, EduPer seatNoWork and school accounts

There are a few more exceptions worth knowing. Accounts identified as belonging to someone under 18 don’t see ads, and OpenAI uses stated age plus age prediction to decide. Temporary Chats show no ads. Ads also don’t appear near sensitive topics like personal health, mental health or politics, and political advertising isn’t allowed at all right now.

So if you’re paying $8 a month for Go, you’re paying and still seeing ads. That surprises a lot of people.

Why you’re suddenly seeing sponsored results

Wondering why a sponsored card popped up under your question about running shoes? It’s usually about context. OpenAI’s help center says ad selection looks at your current conversation and its intent, the advertiser’s landing page and copy, the advertiser’s context hints, and, if personalization is on, select signals from your wider ChatGPT use.

When more than one ad qualifies, ranking weighs relevance and the advertiser’s bid. If personalization is on and memory is enabled, ChatGPT may also use your memories and recent chats to pick ads. That’s the part privacy-minded readers should pay attention to.

“Your conversation decides the ad. Your settings decide how much else gets a say.”

OpenAI also states that ads run on separate systems from the chat model and don’t influence ChatGPT’s answers. You can’t verify that from the outside, so treat it as a company promise rather than a proven fact.

    What OpenAI shares with advertisers

You see, the biggest fear with chatgpt ads is that brands get to read your chats. According to OpenAI’s help center, advertisers don’t receive your chats, chat history, memories, name, email, precise location, IP address or sensitive information. They get aggregated performance data such as views and clicks.

There’s one important exception. If you message an advertiser through an ad, they see the messages you send them. And once you click through to a brand’s website, that site’s own privacy policy applies, not OpenAI’s.

The new brand-suitability pilots follow the same line. OpenAI says DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science will assess how its safeguards work in a controlled testing environment, without accessing private user conversations. IAS CEO Lidiane Jones said the evaluation gives advertisers transparency while:

“preserving the privacy of real user conversations.”

The key takeaway here is simple: brands get numbers, not your words, unless you choose to talk to them directly.

How to cut down on ads in ChatGPT

Can you get rid of ads without paying? Partly. Here are the levers you have, from mildest to most effective.

    1. Turn off ad personalization

Go to Settings, then Ad Controls, and switch off personalization. Ads will still appear, but they’ll only use the chat you’re in, not your other chats, ads history or topics. It’s the easiest privacy win, and it costs you nothing.

    2. Clear your ads data

In the same menu you can delete ads data. OpenAI says this stops the data being used for ads and that it’s kept for up to 30 days before removal from its servers. Your actual chats aren’t affected.

    3. Review memory and chat-history settings

If personalization is on, memories and past chats can feed ad selection. Turning memory or chat-history reference off limits that, but it also stops those features improving your answers. Decide which trade-off you prefer.

    4. Hide or report ads you don’t like

Tap the three-dot menu on an ad and choose Hide ad, or Report ad if something looks misleading or unsafe. You can also check why a specific ad appeared, which is a handy way to see what signals were used.

    5. Use Temporary Chat for one-off questions

Temporary Chats show no ads. They’re handy for quick lookups where you don’t need history saved anyway.

    6. Switch Free to Ads-Free mode

Free users can switch to an Ads-Free experience. Here’s the catch. You get fewer messages and lose features such as image generation and deep research. Go users don’t get this switch and would need to drop to Free or upgrade to Plus.

    7. Upgrade to Plus or leave

Plus and Pro are ad-free. If none of this sits right with you, you can always walk away; our guide on how to delete your ChatGPT account walks you through it safely.

What marketers should know about chatgpt ads

If you run a business, the October update is mostly about proof. Advertisers have wanted to know whether chat ads actually sell things, and OpenAI is responding with more measurement tools.

    • Conversion data: integrations with Hightouch, Tealium and LiveRamp let you send conversion data from existing systems.
    • Attribution partners: AppsFlyer, Triple Whale, Adjust, DV Rockerbox, Northbeam, Branch, Singular, Kochava, Airbridge and Tenjin support Conversions API, reporting and click attribution.
    • Incrementality: geo-based experiments with Haus, Measured and WorkMagic, which OpenAI calls early-stage work.
    • View-through conversions: according to Behind Fintech, OpenAI is adding credit for conversions after an ad view, not just a click.
    • Brand suitability: placement guardrails, Negative Phrases for qualifying advertisers and pilots with DoubleVerify and IAS.

OpenAI shared some early partner-reported numbers. WeightWatchers’ attributed cost per acquisition was 15.3% lower than its blended paid-search benchmark, per DV Rockerbox. Triple Whale reported that 93% of Portland Leather’s ChatGPT Ads visitors were new, and WorkMagic found 67% of Dose’s incremental purchases came from net-new customers. These are partner-selected results, so read them as encouraging rather than typical.

On cost, OpenAI hasn’t published rate cards. The May Ads Manager launch added CPC bidding alongside CPM, with a recommended starting maximum CPC of $3 to $5, after early pilot minimums reportedly as high as $250,000. The ChatGPT Ads site currently offers new advertisers a $500 credit when they spend $500. For context on where this platform is heading, our OpenAI DevDay 2026 recap shows how much of OpenAI’s roadmap now revolves around commerce inside ChatGPT.

Start small, test a clear product category, and measure against your search campaigns before scaling.

Is this the end of an ad-free ChatGPT?

For free users, yes, mostly. TechCrunch notes OpenAI expects ads to eventually reach all of ChatGPT’s free users once they roll out worldwide. That said, OpenAI is still drawing lines: no ads for minors, none near health or politics, and paid tiers stay clean.

Not everyone agrees with the direction. Back in February, Anthropic ran Super Bowl commercials mocking the idea of ads in AI chats, and OpenAI’s leaders pushed back publicly. Rival products are betting that “no ads” is a selling point. Whether that holds up as costs climb is the big open question.

Your next move with ChatGPT ads

Fast forward to the next few weeks and visual ads will start showing up for US Free and Go users who generate images. You don’t need to panic, but it’s a good moment to take five minutes and set things up your way.

Open Settings, visit Ad Controls, decide whether personalization is worth it to you, and clear your ads data if you’d rather start fresh. If ads bother you enough, Plus is the simplest fix, and Ads-Free mode is there if you can live without image generation. Either way, you’re in control, and that’s the part worth holding OpenAI to.

    Frequently asked questions

Will I see ads on a free ChatGPT account?

Probably, if you’re a logged-in adult in a region where ads are rolling out. OpenAI shows ads to Free and Go users, while Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts stay ad-free.

What makes a particular ad show up in my chat?

Mostly the context of your current conversation, plus the advertiser’s landing page, copy and context hints. If ad personalization is on, ChatGPT may also use signals from other chats and memories. You can check why an ad appeared from the ad’s menu.

Were the commercials poking fun at ChatGPT ads actual TV spots?

Yes. In February 2026 Anthropic ran a campaign called A Time and a Place, including Super Bowl spots, that mocked ads in AI chats. OpenAI’s leaders criticized the ads publicly.

What does it cost a business to advertise in ChatGPT?

OpenAI hasn’t published fixed prices. Ads Manager supports CPM and CPC buying, OpenAI has recommended a starting maximum CPC of $3 to $5, and new advertisers can currently get a $500 credit after spending $500.

Can advertisers read what I type to ChatGPT?

No, according to OpenAI. Advertisers get aggregated data like views and clicks, not your chats, memories, name, email or precise location. If you message a brand through an ad, they see only those messages.

Is there a way to use ChatGPT without ads and without paying?

Free users can switch to an Ads-Free mode, but it comes with fewer messages and no image generation or deep research. Temporary Chats also show no ads.
