    Key Takeaways

    1. 1
Release and Length: Final Fantasy Resonance brings a rebuilt Final Fantasy Brave Exvius story to consoles and PC on October 22, 2026, starting at $49.99. You can expect a reported 20-30-hour campaign or around 70 hours to complete everything.
    2. 2
Choose Your Platform: Choose Final Fantasy Resonance on PS5 for a physical disc, Switch 2 for portable play with a Game-Key Card, or Steam for Steam Deck support. You cannot transfer saves between the separate Nintendo versions, and no Switch-to-Switch 2 upgrade pack is planned.
    3. 3
Try Before Buying: Try Final Fantasy Resonance’s free 3-5-hour demo before buying, with progress carrying into the full game. You can start with Standard at $49.99, while Digital Deluxe costs $59.99 and the $209.99 Collector’s Edition adds physical collectibles.

A new HD-2D Final Fantasy arrives this Thursday, October 22. Before you spend $49.99 on Final Fantasy Resonance, though, there is a practical question to settle. Do you want a disc for your shelf or a game you can take with you?

We would pick PS5 for a physical disc, Switch 2 for portable play with its Game-Key Card option, or Steam on PC if you want to use a Steam Deck. There are no confirmed loading-time comparisons yet, so a PS5 speed advantage should not decide your purchase.

    What Final Fantasy Resonance Is

Final Fantasy Resonance takes the first season of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and rebuilds it as a standalone RPG. Square Enix describes this as more than a port or remake, and bills it as the series’ first HD-2D game. Before you choose a platform, here is what you will actually be playing.

    • A crystal crisis. You begin in Grandshelt, a kingdom defended by crystal power. Rain, an airship squadron commander, and his deputy Lasswell investigate trouble at the Earth Shrine before Veritas of the Dark destroys the Earth Crystal and attacks their kingdom.
    • Your travelling party. Fina accompanies Rain and Lasswell as they try to save the crystals still intact, with no memory of her past beyond her own name. Other playable characters include Charlotte, Leah and Tronn, while English voices include Clifford Chapin as Rain and Alejandro Saab as Lasswell.
    • Turn-based battles. You can see upcoming turns on a timeline, giving you time to plan around enemy actions. Elemental weaknesses and a stagger gauge give you reasons to choose attacks carefully instead of repeating the same move.
    • Visions and abilities. Each character equips one Vision, drawing stats and skills from familiar heroes such as Cloud, Terra and the Warrior of Light. Learned abilities can remain equipped within a cost limit, so your earlier choices can keep helping you.
    • Stagger and Resonances. Stagger one enemy and you earn an extra action. Stagger every enemy and each party member gets another action, with one cinematic, Vision-specific Resonance available during that bonus phase.
    • Espers and optional fights. Summoned allies such as Siren and Ramuh stay for three turns before delivering a finishing attack, at a substantial MP cost. You can also tackle the Colosseum, Chamber of Arms and Ultima Weapon if you want more battles beyond the main story.

    Every Version Compared

Buying the version for your newest console sounds obvious, right? With Final Fantasy Resonance, the physical format, portable options and separate Nintendo releases give you a few more things to check. Here is how the five versions compare before you commit.

    PlatformFormatDownload sizeNotes
PS5Physical disc or digitalReportedly 11.881 GBYour disc option if you prefer PlayStation
Xbox Series X\SDigitalReportedly about 14 GBXbox Play Anywhere supports Xbox and Windows PC
SwitchPhysical cartridge or digitalEstimated 8.8 GBAlso supported on Switch 2 with behaviour consistent with Switch
Switch 2Game-Key Card or digitalEstimated 12.7 GBSeparate release with TV, tabletop and handheld play
PCDigital through Steam or Microsoft StoreListed storage requirement of 15 GBSteam Deck Verified on Steam, Play Anywhere through Microsoft Store

    Check the Nintendo Version

The Nintendo choice deserves your attention. There is no planned upgrade pack from the Switch release to the separate Switch 2 release, and you cannot move saves between them in either direction. Buy the Switch version now and you should not expect to continue that save in the Switch 2 version later.

You can still play the original Switch release on Switch 2 through compatibility support. Nintendo describes its behaviour there as consistent with the Switch version. That gives you another option if you already own the older release, although it remains separate from buying the Switch 2 edition.

    Compare PC Options and Storage

On PC, choose your storefront with your other hardware in mind. Steam gives you the Steam Deck Verified release, while Microsoft Store purchases support Xbox Play Anywhere. Steam requires an internet connection for first-time setup, and the Steam release uses Denuvo.

The listed sizes are useful for planning storage, but they do not establish which version loads fastest. Likewise, Steam Deck verification does not confirm a particular frame rate. Try the free demo on your preferred hardware before paying for the full game.

Switch 2 or PS5, Which One Should You Pick

Your best choice depends on where you will actually play. A physical disc, handheld sessions and access across Xbox and PC each give you a different reason to choose. Start with your own habits, then use these points to narrow down your purchase.

    Pick PS5 If

You want a physical disc and expect to play on your TV. PS5 gives you that option alongside the digital release, making it our recommendation if having a disc matters more than portability.

Just keep loading-speed claims out of your decision for now. There are no confirmed comparisons showing how much faster PS5 loads than Switch 2, so try the PS5 demo before treating performance as a reason to buy.

    Pick Switch 2 If

You want to move between TV, tabletop and handheld play. That flexibility is the clearest reason to choose Switch 2, especially if you tend to fit RPG sessions around other things.

Check the box format before ordering, though. The Switch 2 retail release uses a Game-Key Card, while the original Switch release has a physical cartridge option. The two Nintendo versions also have separate saves, with no transfer between them and no planned upgrade pack.

What About PC, Xbox and Switch 1

Choose Steam if you want the Steam Deck Verified release. If you plan to play on a handheld, remember that you must go online for the initial setup and that Denuvo is included in the Steam release.

Choose Microsoft Store if Xbox Play Anywhere is useful to you across Xbox Series X|S and Windows PC. You can also buy the original Switch version and play it on Switch 2 through compatibility support, but that does not turn your purchase into the separate Switch 2 edition. Playing on PS5? Standard, Digital Deluxe or Collector’s Edition

You can spend $49.99 on the game or go all the way to $209.99 for the Collector’s Edition. The extra money buys digital items and, at the top tier, physical collectibles. Before you pay more, compare what each edition gives you.

    EditionUS PriceContents
Standard$49.99Base game, with applicable pre-order and early-purchase bonuses
Digital Deluxe$59.99Base game and Magitek & Grimoire Deluxe Pack, including a chocobo appearance change, Archwitch’s Grimoire, Mastery Ring and consumables
Collector’s Edition$209.99Physical Standard game, Digital Deluxe Upgrade code, acrylic block set, pixel art book, 120-track soundtrack CD and promotional trading card

    Decide Whether Extras Matter

We would start with Standard unless you already want the extras. Digital Deluxe costs $10 more at purchase, while adding the Digital Deluxe Upgrade later costs $14.99. The Mastery Ring helps your affinity with Visions, and the Archwitch’s Grimoire provides access to one character’s Fel Meteor Limit Burst.

Want the collectibles without another game copy? The Collector’s Goods Box is available separately for $150, while the complete Collector’s Edition is exclusive to the Square Enix Store. Do not pay more expecting an earlier start, since no edition advertises early access.

    Check Your Bonus Eligibility

Your purchase timing matters for two separate item packs.

    • Pre-order bonus. Ordering before release gets you the Magitek Airship & Squire Starter Pack. It contains an airship appearance option, Knight’s Greatsword, EXP-boosting chest armour, a Magicite Shard, three Tents and three Mist Potions.
    • Early-purchase bonus. Buying by November 5 gets you the Squire Kickstart Pack, containing gil-boosting armour and a Mist Ether. PlayStation lists the deadline as one minute before midnight locally, while Nintendo specifies Pacific Standard Time.

You collect these bonus items at the postbox outside Mitra’s inn once you reach the required story point. Buying the right edition does not mean every extra appears immediately.

    Try the Free Demo First

You do not have to choose your version from screenshots alone. The free demo lets you play through Chapter 1 in Grandshelt, with roughly 3-5 hours of content and progress that can continue into the full release. Use those hours to test your preferred hardware, then prepare your save before buying.

    1. Choose the version you intend to buy. The demo is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2 and PC through Steam or Microsoft Store. Start on your likely purchase platform so you can judge that version for yourself.
    1. Play through the opening chapter. Give yourself enough time to assess the turn-based battles and story rather than stopping after the first few minutes. The demo reaches the end of Chapter 1, so you have more than a brief introduction to try.
    1. Keep your demo save. Progress carries into the full game, making those opening hours useful if you decide to purchase. Keep the save available while you move from the trial to the paid release.
    1. Check the Nintendo version carefully. Save transfer between the Switch and Switch 2 demos has not been confirmed. Since the full releases cannot exchange saves, do not assume starting on Switch will let you continue in the separate Switch 2 edition.
    1. Confirm your progress in the full game. Check that you can continue from your demo progress before removing any saved data. Save carryover is announced, but you should not assume that it includes moving between platforms or between the two Nintendo releases.

Still undecided between PS5 and Switch 2? Try both demos before spending anything. You can compare playing on your TV with handheld sessions and choose the version you would actually return to.

Early Reviews and How Long It Takes to Beat

Final Fantasy Resonance has an encouraging first review, but you should keep the score separate from a full critical consensus. As of October 19, Western full reviews and aggregate scores were still pending. Here is what you can take from the early coverage before deciding whether to buy.

    • Famitsu’s score. The Japanese magazine awarded 36/40, with all four reviewers giving the game 9/10. That is a positive early result, although you should not treat one publication’s verdict as proof that every version performs equally well.
    • Main story length. Famitsu’s reported estimate puts the campaign at around 20-30 hours. If you mainly want to follow Rain, Lasswell and Fina, that gives you a useful planning range rather than a promise about exactly when you will finish.
    • Full completion. Doing everything reportedly takes about 70 hours, leaving considerably more to tackle beyond the main story. You have optional activities such as the Colosseum, Chamber of Arms and Ultima Weapon battle if you want to keep playing.
    • Hands-on impressions. Engadget praised the HD-2D presentation, orchestral music and battle system after a one-hour session. The same preview criticised random encounters without enemies visible on the map and the reliance on familiar characters, giving you two things to assess in the demo.
    • What remains uncertain. An unverified reader comment suggested a longer 30-40-hour campaign estimate, but that claim has not been confirmed. You should also avoid treating an early preview or a predicted review score as a finished assessment.

Does 20-30 hours sound too brief for your $49.99? Try the opening chapter before deciding. Those free hours can help you judge whether the battles and story make you want the rest.

    Release Time and Pre-Load

Final Fantasy Resonance is scheduled for October 22, but the exact hour deserves more caution than the date. Pre-load and midnight release details have been reported, while a confirmed timetable covering every region and storefront is still missing. Before you plan your first session, check these details.

    • Pre-load date. Reports put the start of pre-loading on October 20, two days before release. If you have pre-ordered digitally, check your chosen store that day rather than assuming every platform will offer the download at the same hour.
    • Reported start time. Midnight in your local timezone is the reported release timing. Treat that as provisional until your storefront confirms it, since there is no verified region-by-region schedule establishing precisely when every version becomes playable.
    • Different calendar dates. The Greek PlayStation listing shows October 21, while one article lists October 23 for Steam. Most listings and coverage give October 22, so check the date attached to your own purchase before arranging time to play.
    • Possible timezone differences. Those dates may reflect regional timing, but that explanation remains unconfirmed. You should not use either listing to assume that changing regions or choosing another storefront will get you into the game earlier.
    • Game Pass status. No Game Pass release has been announced as of October 19. Xbox Play Anywhere support does not establish Game Pass availability, so plan around buying the game unless Microsoft or Square Enix confirms otherwise.

There is no advertised early access attached to Digital Deluxe or the Collector’s Edition either. Pay extra only if you want their contents, then use your store’s release information to plan when you can start. While you wait, our list of PS Plus games for October 2026 has more to play on PS5.

    Our Verdict

We would choose PS5 if you want a physical disc, or Switch 2 if handheld play will help you spend more time with the game. Both choices make sense, but neither needs a more expensive edition to justify it. Your next step is to match the version and edition to how you actually play.

    Choose Your Platform

If most of your gaming happens on the sofa, PS5 is our pick for a disc copy. You can try the demo before buying and see whether the presentation and battles suit you. Just do not pay on the assumption that a confirmed loading-speed advantage exists, because that comparison is still missing.

If you prefer shorter sessions away from the TV, Switch 2 has the stronger practical appeal. Remember that its retail option uses a Game-Key Card, and choose the correct Nintendo version before starting. There is no planned upgrade pack or save transfer connecting the separate Switch and Switch 2 releases.

PC and Xbox deserve consideration if they fit the hardware you already use. Steam gives you a Steam Deck Verified release, while Microsoft Store offers Xbox Play Anywhere. Those benefits may matter more to you than owning either console version.

    Choose Your Edition After Trying

For the edition, we would start with Standard at $49.99. Digital Deluxe is worth considering if you specifically want its items, while the $209.99 Collector’s Edition makes more sense if you want the physical collectibles. You do not need to spend that much simply to play.

Most of all, give the free demo a proper try. You get roughly 3-5 hours to decide whether these characters and turn-based battles deserve more of your time. If they do, you can keep that progress and buy with a clearer idea of what you are getting. If you game on Xbox, our breakdown of whether Game Pass Ultimate is worth it helps you plan your next subscription.

    FAQs

When does Final Fantasy Resonance come out?

You can expect Final Fantasy Resonance on October 22, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2 and PC. Midnight local timing has been reported, but you should check your storefront because a complete regional schedule has not been confirmed.

Is Final Fantasy Resonance a remake?

You are getting a rebuilt version of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius’s first season, which Square Enix describes as more than a conventional remake or port. Final Fantasy Resonance presents that story as a standalone HD-2D RPG with turn-based battles.

How long is Final Fantasy Resonance?

You should allow roughly 20-30 hours for the main story, based on the estimate reported from Famitsu. Completing everything reportedly takes around 70 hours, so your total will depend on how much optional content you tackle.

Does demo progress carry over to the full game?

Yes, you can continue your demo progress in the full release of Final Fantasy Resonance. Keep your save and choose your version carefully, since transfer between the Switch and Switch 2 demos has not been confirmed and the full Nintendo releases cannot exchange saves.

Is Final Fantasy Resonance on Game Pass?

You should not expect Game Pass access based on the announcements available as of October 19, because no subscription release has been confirmed. Xbox Play Anywhere support is listed, but you should plan on a purchase unless a Game Pass announcement follows.

Can you upgrade from Switch to Switch 2 for free?

No, you cannot move to the separate Switch 2 edition through a free upgrade, and no upgrade pack is planned. You can play the original Switch release on Switch 2 through compatibility support, but your save cannot transfer to the separate Switch 2 version.
