You paid for a game, but your bank balance dropped and there’s nothing to play. A Steam purchase pending error usually means your payment has not finished processing. If the purchase fails, Steam does not collect the money reserved by your bank, although the bank can take up to 30 days to release it.

Before you buy again, check the existing order. Here are the key details to keep in mind.

What Steam Purchase Pending Actually Means

Your bank balance and your Steam order can tell different stories. You see, your bank can reserve money before Steam finishes the sale. That makes a failed checkout look like a successful payment when you check your available balance. To understand what happened, separate these three stages.

    • Still processing. Your order has not reached a final result. Check its status through Account name > Account details > View purchase history rather than treating the bank entry as proof that the sale succeeded.
    • Purchase completed. Steam has finished the transaction. Even if you briefly see the game in your library, payment is not necessarily settled, and you could lose access if the transaction fails.
    • Purchase failed. Your bank may still have money reserved against the attempt. That reservation reduces your available balance, but it is different from a settled charge. Steam does not take those reserved funds after the purchase fails.

Canceling the order does not make the bank reservation disappear immediately. Your bank’s release schedule still applies, so checking both records matters before you try again.

Why Your Steam Purchase Is Stuck on Pending

A delayed order does not tell you exactly what went wrong. Your card information, payment restrictions or an earlier unfinished purchase can each explain why checkout has stalled. Start with the causes that match your payment method and the error you received.

    • Card details or bank restrictions. An incorrect security code, mistyped card information or an expired saved card can stop payment. Your bank may also reject attempts that exceed its transaction limits or trigger a fraud alert.
    • Billing address mismatch. Steam rejects payments that fail the bank’s address check. Compare your billing information with the address your bank holds, even if the card number is correct.
    • Another unfinished purchase. An earlier pending order can block your next attempt. Check that transaction before submitting another payment for the same game.
    • VPN or proxy use. Steam rejects transactions routed through anonymous proxies. Its guidance is to disable your VPN or proxy, restart your computer and retry.
    • Store country mismatch. When traveling, use a payment method that matches your Steam store country and disable any VPN or proxy.
    • Unregistered prepaid card. Your card issuer may require online registration before you can shop with it. A failed attempt can still leave funds reserved.
    • PayPal currency restrictions. Steam lists PayPal support for EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD and USD. If you use another currency, that restriction may explain the failure.

Payment apps stall for many of the same reasons, as our guides on Cash App payment failed and Venmo payment declined show.

How Long a Pending Purchase Takes

There is no universal 24-hour deadline for every Steam purchase. You need to separate the time an order takes to finish from the time your bank takes to return reserved funds. Use these timings to decide what to check next.

    SituationTypical wait
Purchase still processingYou can allow 10-20 minutes during a sale before troubleshooting, but there is no confirmed deadline for completion
Failed purchase with a bank holdYou may wait as long as 30 days for your bank to free the held funds
Failed card security-code checkAfter a failed security-code check, your bank may keep the amount reserved for as many as 10 business days
Completed wallet top-up missingContact Steam Support if the funds remain absent after more than 2 hours
Eligible saved cartYou have 72 hours from the saved-cart email to retry with the retained discount

The 72-hour cart window is a retry deadline, not a promise that your payment will finish within three days.

How to Fix a Steam Purchase Pending Error

Before you submit another payment, find out what happened to the first one. Why risk another bank hold while the original order is unresolved? Work through these checks, starting with your transaction record.

    1. Check whether the purchase actually failed.

Open Account name > Account details > View purchase history and check the order’s current status. Look for an email confirming either success or a payment problem, then compare it with the transaction record. Your bank app alone cannot confirm whether Steam finished the sale, so settle that question before retrying.

    2. Cancel the stuck transaction.

    1. Open Account name > Account details > View purchase history.
    2. Select the unfinished order, then follow Your purchase > Cancel this transaction > Cancel my purchase.
    3. Check the transaction record again before attempting another payment.

Canceling the Steam order does not immediately free money reserved by your bank.

    3. Turn off your VPN or proxy and restart.

Disable your VPN or IP proxy, then restart your computer before trying checkout again. Steam says it rejects purchases sent through anonymous proxies, so repeated attempts through the same connection will not solve that problem. If you are traveling, use a payment method that matches your store country.

    4. Switch between the Steam client and the website.

If checkout keeps failing in the desktop app, try Steam through your browser. If you started in the browser, use the desktop app instead, as Steam recommends trying the other version when purchases fail repeatedly. Check the existing order before submitting payment through either route.

    5. Double-check your card details and billing address.

Compare your card number, expiration date, security code and billing address with your card and bank records. Steam rejects transactions that fail the address or security-code checks, even when your bank reserves the amount. If everything matches, ask your bank whether a spending limit, transaction limit or fraud alert blocked payment.

    6. Retry from your saved cart.

For an eligible failed purchase, use the emailed cart link or follow Account name > Account details > View purchase history > Your saved cart > I want to repurchase this saved cart. You have 72 hours from the email, with the discount retained even after the sale ends. This excludes bundles, coupon purchases, recurring subscriptions and failures before the payment stage. Steam Support cannot add more time.

    7. Try a different payment method or a Steam Wallet card.

If your card keeps failing after you check the details, Steam suggests another payment method or a wallet card from a physical store. Before using a prepaid bank gift card, complete any online registration your issuer requires. If you choose PayPal, Steam lists support for EUR, CAD, GBP, JPY, AUD and USD.

    8. Call your bank about the hold.

Ask whether the entry is a temporary reservation or a settled payment, and request the expected release date. Explain that the Steam purchase failed if your order record confirms that result. Some security-code failures leave funds reserved for up to 10 business days, while other failed-purchase holds can last up to 30 days. Your bank determines the applicable timing.

    9. Contact Steam Support with the right details.

If you still cannot pay, send Steam Support your Steam account name and copy the error message into your request. Include the game or item, transaction date, amount, current status and payment method, plus a screenshot with sensitive information hidden. Never provide your complete card number, expiration date or security code. Keep passwords and verification codes away from anyone claiming to provide unofficial support.

Charged but Still Pending – Is Your Money Gone

A lower available balance does not automatically mean Steam received your money. You see, a bank reservation can make the funds unavailable while the purchase remains unfinished. Before assuming you have lost the amount, compare the bank entry with your Steam order.

If the purchase failed, Steam does not collect the reserved money. Your bank releases it under its own timetable, so canceling the order will not necessarily change your available balance that day.

Seeing two entries? A pending reservation beside a settled charge can represent one purchase rather than two separate payments. Ask your bank to identify each entry before treating it as a duplicate.

If the payment has settled but you still have no game, contact Steam Support with the transaction details. If you accidentally completed two purchases, explain that too. You can request a refund, though approval depends on the applicable refund rules.

Steam Refunds When Something Goes Wrong

A refund applies to money paid for a purchase, while a bank hold follows the issuer’s release process. If your transaction completed and you need your money back, check which policy applies before submitting your request. These are the main rules to check.

    • Game purchases. You can normally request a refund within 14 days if you have played for less than 2 hours. Steam may review requests beyond those limits, but acceptance is not guaranteed.
    • Unused wallet funds. You can request a refund within 14 days for unused funds purchased directly through Steam.
    • Gift purchases. Unclaimed gifts follow the standard time and playtime limits. If your recipient claimed the gift, they must initiate the request, and the payment returns to you.
    • Refund timing. Steam issues approved refunds within a week. Your refund goes to the original payment method where supported, or to your Steam Wallet when that method cannot receive it.

Mistakes That Make Pending Purchases Worse

When checkout stalls, trying again feels like the obvious next move. But another attempt can leave you with more payment entries to check. Before you retry, avoid these mistakes.

    • Buying repeatedly. Check the first order before paying again. Multiple attempts can leave you sorting through additional holds or duplicate purchases.
    • Leaving a VPN connected. Steam rejects purchases through anonymous proxies. Turn off your VPN or proxy and restart your computer before another attempt.
    • Using mismatched payment details. When traveling, pay with a method that matches your Steam store country. Recheck your billing address and security code too.
    • Starting a chargeback before checking the payment. Talk to Steam Support and your bank first. Establish whether you have a temporary hold, a completed payment or a duplicate charge before deciding what to do.

    Get Back to Your Game

Your next step is to check the existing order, then deal with the result you actually have. If checkout failed, correct the payment problem before retrying through an eligible saved cart. If your bank still has funds reserved, ask when you can expect them to become available.

One checked transaction at a time.

You do not need to solve every possible payment problem at once. Start with your Steam record, compare it with your bank entry, and send Steam Support the details if they do not match. That gives you a clear next action while you work toward getting back to your game.

    FAQs

How long can a Steam payment stay pending?

Your purchase has no confirmed universal completion deadline, so a fixed 24-hour promise would be misleading. If checkout fails but your bank keeps the amount reserved, that hold can last as long as 30 days, based on the issuer. Check the order’s status and ask your bank about the release date rather than treating both waiting periods as the same thing.

Did Steam take your money if the purchase says pending?

A pending status does not prove Steam has received your money. Your bank may have reserved the amount, reducing what you can spend without settling the payment. If the purchase failed, Steam does not collect that reservation, and your bank returns the funds to your available balance under its own policy.

Why does Steam say you have another pending transaction?

You have an earlier unfinished transaction that is preventing another purchase attempt. Check Account name > Account details > View purchase history and inspect that order before paying again. Cancel the stuck order through its transaction options if you want to stop it before retrying.

Can you cancel a pending Steam order?

You can cancel an unfinished order through Account name > Account details > View purchase history > Your purchase > Cancel this transaction > Cancel my purchase. Afterward, check the order record before submitting another payment. Canceling does not immediately remove any bank hold associated with that attempt.

Why are purchases on a new Steam account always pending?

Steam has not published a specific new-account purchase-hold rule that explains your delay. Check your card information, billing address, store country and any unfinished orders, then disable your VPN or proxy before retrying. If purchases keep failing, ask Steam Support to check your account and ask your bank whether it is rejecting the payments.

Do you keep the sale price if a Steam purchase fails?

You can retain the discount when Steam creates an eligible saved cart and you retry within its 72-hour window. That period begins with the saved-cart email, even if the sale ends afterward. Bundles, coupon purchases, recurring subscriptions and attempts that fail before the payment stage are excluded, and Steam Support cannot extend the deadline.
