OpenAI DevDay 2026 delivered more than 20 announcements on September 29, 2026, and three matter most to you: a cheaper flagship-class model called GPT-6.1 Sol, always-on personal agents called Dots, and a new $500-a-month Pro tier. If you build with the API, Sol cuts costs to about a fifth of GPT-6 Astra. If you just use ChatGPT, the big shift is agents that keep working when you close the app.

Below you’ll find every major launch from OpenAI DevDay 2026, what each one costs, which plan you need, and what to do next.

    Why OpenAI DevDay 2026 Matters

OpenAI’s developer conference used to be about API updates. This year the keynote leaned hard into agents that act on your behalf, not just chatbots that answer questions.

The scale behind it is huge. OpenAI says ChatGPT now reaches 1.2 billion weekly users, which is the audience developers can now build for through plugins, Sites and “Sign in with ChatGPT.”

The company also shared a telling stat during the keynote. Agent success on long 8–16 hour tasks rose from 10% in January to 35% in July 2026, according to a live blog of the event. That’s why so many launches this year are about letting AI work unattended.

GPT-6.1 Sol: Near-Flagship Power at a Fifth of the Price

GPT-6.1 Sol is the headline model. OpenAI says it brings “near-Astra intelligence” at one-fifth of GPT-6 Astra’s token prices.

You can use it today in ChatGPT on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu plans. Developers can call it in the API as gpt-6.1-sol.

    How GPT-6.1 Sol performs

OpenAI’s published results focus on coding and computer use, where agents spend most of their time.

    • DeepSWE v1.1: matches GPT-6 Astra and beats the older GPT-6 Sol by 6.4 points
    • OSWorld 2.0: 7 points ahead of GPT-6 Sol at maximum reasoning effort
    • AutomationBench: 4.8 points ahead of GPT-6 Sol at medium effort
    • Factual errors: down from 11.4% to 7.7% at low reasoning effort

GPT-6.1 Sol vs GPT-6 Astra API pricing

    ModelInput (per 1M tokens)Cached inputOutput (per 1M tokens) |
    GPT-6.1 Sol$2.00$0.10$10.00 |
    GPT-6 Astra$10.00$1.00$50.00 |
    GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast$60.00Not listed$300.00 |

For most apps, that price gap is the real story. If your product runs thousands of agent steps a day, moving routine work from Astra to Sol could cut your model bill by roughly 80%.

Dots: Always-On Agents That Work While You’re Away

Dots are OpenAI’s new always-on, proactive agents. OpenAI pitches them as a way to “take important work off your plate” so you get more time back.

Each Dot runs on the Astra model. You assign it tasks, connect it to your apps, and it learns your preferences over time.

    Who can use Dots

    • Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets get access now
    • Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces get a beta that an admin must switch on
    • Your first Dot is included; extra Dots will cost more, but OpenAI hasn’t published that price yet

Think of a Dot as a standing assistant rather than a chat. It can watch for events, follow up on tasks, and hand results back to you or your team. If you already use tools covered in our guide to AI personal assistants for entrepreneurs, Dots is OpenAI’s attempt to fold that whole category into ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Plans After DevDay: What You Pay and What You Get

DevDay reshaped the top of ChatGPT’s price list. The biggest change is the new Pro 500 tier at $500 per month.

    PlanKey DevDay additionsNotes |
PlusGPT-6.1 Sol in ChatGPTBaseline for usage limits |
ProDots, ChatGPT Space, PagesSeveral usage tiers; OpenAI reopened Pro 200 on stage |
Pro 50025x Plus allowance, Ultrafast, Agents API with computer useNew, $500 a month |
Business / Business PremiumSpace, team tasks, Dots on PremiumPer-seat pricing via sales |
Enterprise / EduDots beta, Sol, Marketplace creditsAdmin controls |

Is Pro 500 worth it for you? Only if you hit Plus or Pro limits every week, or you need Ultrafast speed for heavy coding. OpenAI has struggled with the economics of unlimited plans before, as we covered when OpenAI admitted it was losing money on ChatGPT Pro, so the higher tier also looks like a pricing correction.

Ultrafast: Faster Answers for a Premium

Ultrafast is a new speed tier. OpenAI says it delivers up to 8x faster token generation (about 300 tokens per second) in Codex and up to 6x faster in the API.

Speed costs extra. Ultrafast runs at about 6x standard pricing, which is why GPT-6 Astra Ultrafast lists at $60 input and $300 output per million tokens.

Today Ultrafast works with GPT-6 Astra in the API and in Codex or ChatGPT Work on Pro 500 and Enterprise. A GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast version is marked as coming soon.

ChatGPT Space, Pages and Team Features

ChatGPT Space is a shared workspace where your team, ChatGPT and your Dots work on the same projects. Axios compared it to a blend of Slack, Notion and Google Drive.

Alongside Space, OpenAI added several collaboration tools:

    • Pages: a new document type built for people and agents to edit together
    • Collaborative slides: arriving in the coming weeks
    • Teams: create teams, share tasks and delegate recurring work (Business and Enterprise)
    • @ChatGPT in Slack and Microsoft Teams: mention ChatGPT inside your chat tools
    • Meetings plugin: a macOS beta for Pro and Business users

Space, Pages and slides are available on Pro, Business and Enterprise on desktop and web.

Developer Launches: Agents API, Decisions API and Codex

If you build software, this is where DevDay 2026 got busy.

    Agents API with computer use

The Agents API now supports computer use, so agents can operate software the way you would. It also adds multi-agent setups, tool search and context compaction for long jobs.

    Decisions API

The Decisions API lets you hand narrow, repetitive calls to AI. You define the possible outcomes, and the model picks one in real time, using OpenAI’s small Luna model.

It entered limited preview on September 29. Launch coverage lists pricing at $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens, though OpenAI’s recap doesn’t state a price.

    Codex updates

    • Codex in the cloud: run the coding agent remotely and check tasks from your phone
    • Voice commands and better task delegation in the Codex CLI
    • Code review in the Codex desktop app
    • Codex Security Cloud: scanning for GitHub repositories

These tools push further into the trend we described in what vibe coding is and how AI is changing software development. You describe the goal; the agent writes, reviews and secures the code.

    Privacy: OpenAI Private Intelligence

Businesses worried about data got a new umbrella called Private Intelligence.

It combines Zero Data Retention with Private Safety Processing, so safety reviews can run automatically without humans reading your data. A Private Inference option, built on confidential computing with verifiable controls, is due in preview this fall.

What OpenAI DevDay 2026 Means for You

Here’s the practical takeaway, depending on who you are.

    • Casual ChatGPT user: you get GPT-6.1 Sol on Plus. You don’t need to upgrade for Dots unless you want an always-on assistant.
    • Power user: compare your weekly usage against Pro and Pro 500 before paying 25x Plus pricing.
    • Developer: test GPT-6.1 Sol against Astra on your own tasks. The 5x price cut is worth a benchmark run.
    • Business owner: trial ChatGPT Space with one team first, and check Private Intelligence terms with your IT lead.

    What to watch next

OpenAI left three questions open, and each one could change your plan choice.

    • Extra Dots pricing: OpenAI hasn’t said what additional Dots will cost
    • Sol Ultrafast timing: the faster Sol version is only marked “coming soon”
    • Cheaper access: there’s no word yet on Dots reaching Plus or Go users

The launches also landed during a tense stretch for OpenAI, with reports of agent safety incidents in the weeks before DevDay. Expect scrutiny of always-on agents to grow as they roll out.
