Your chat suddenly locks, and you cannot send another message. If you are searching for “ChatGPT memory full”, two warnings need different fixes – “Chat memory full” means one conversation has reached its context capacity, so you need a new chat with a transferred summary; “Memory full” concerns saved details, which you can remove through Settings > Personalization > Memory.
You see, memory has two jobs. One keeps information available within a conversation. The other retains details about you for future conversations. Read the warning before you start deleting anything.
| Message you see | What is actually full | Fastest fix |
|---|---|---|
| Chat memory full | The affected conversation’s context capacity | Start a new conversation with a carried-over summary |
| Memory full | Space for saved memories | Remove unwanted entries through Settings > Personalization > Memory |
Chat Memory Full vs Saved Memory Full – Which One Do You Have?
Both warnings sound like you have run out of room, but the room serves different purposes. A conversation limit concerns what ChatGPT can work with during that chat. Saved memories hold information separately from your conversation history. Here is how you can tell them apart.
| Detail | Chat memory full | Saved memory full |
|---|---|---|
| Where it shows | In the affected conversation | In the saved-memory area |
| What is full | Capacity for that conversation’s context | Storage for remembered details |
| Does deleting saved memories help | It is not the fix OpenAI Support recommends | Yes, removing entries makes room for new ones |
| Do other chats still work | You can continue in a new conversation | You can still chat, but the full legacy list cannot accept new memories |
| Main fix | Transfer a summary into a new chat | Delete unwanted saved information or ask ChatGPT to forget it |
For a locked conversation, continue your work in another chat. For a full saved-memory list, review which details you still want retained.
Why ChatGPT Says Chat Memory Full Now
The earliest dated report found appeared on October 2, 2026, with further reports through October 13. OpenAI Support explained that the affected conversation had used its available context capacity and suggested continuing elsewhere with a summary. If yours fills sooner than expected, support asks for your platform, selected model, plan and approximate time.
Why might your own messages seem too short to explain it? The context window also accommodates system instructions, memory and internal processing. Your text gets less room than the advertised total, and the figures vary with the features you use.
What we know comes from support and published plan information.
- Conversation capacity. Support identifies the warning as a limit within the affected chat.
- Summary transfer. ChatGPT should bring a summary into the next conversation, according to support.
- Different plan figures. Published context windows vary by subscription and model type. The connection between those figures and this warning is our reading, not an OpenAI statement.
What isn’t confirmed yet matters before you change plans.
- The reason it appeared. We cannot confirm whether this is an intentional rollout or a bug. No matching help article or release-note explanation was found as of October 14.
- The exact threshold. OpenAI has not connected this warning to the published context-window numbers.
- An outage connection. No checked status incident identifies this warning as an outage symptom.
- Other recent changes. Neither the September plan changes nor the October GPT-6 release has a confirmed connection.
- Summary completeness. It is still unclear whether you can edit the carried-over summary or whether it includes every detail.
Context Window by ChatGPT Plan
The ChatGPT pricing page checked on October 14 lists these approximate totals for your plan.
| Plan | GPT Instant context window | Reasoning context window | Memory |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 27K | Varies | Limited |
| Go | 54K | 256K | Yes |
| Plus | 54K | 256K | Expanded |
| Pro | 128K | 400K | Expanded |
A smaller window gives you less capacity for a long conversation. These totals include other processing, so your messages cannot use all that space. We read the figures as evidence of different conversation capacities by plan; OpenAI has not explained precisely how they determine this warning. How to Fix Chat Memory Full (7 Fixes)
When a conversation reaches its limit, OpenAI Support recommends continuing in another chat with a summary. Projects and attachments can help with longer tasks. You do not need to change plans before trying the recommended fix. Start here, then choose the other steps that fit your work.
1. Tap Continue in a new chat.
Use the continuation option when your conversation stops accepting messages. OpenAI Support says ChatGPT should transfer a summary into the next chat, so you have something to build on.
Check the key facts and decisions before continuing. A summary is the stated handover method, but its completeness and whether you can edit it have not been confirmed.
2. Save the important parts before you switch.
Before moving on, copy the details you cannot afford to lose track of. For a writing task, that might mean your instructions, agreed changes and the latest draft. For another task, keep the facts and decisions you will need next.
Bring those essentials into the new conversation, then check that the information your next request depends on is there.
3. Move long work into a Project.
For ongoing work, a project groups your files, chats and instructions. A new conversation can then use shared project material rather than relying entirely on the previous chat.
- Open your project, then follow ••• > Project settings > Memory.
- To allow saved memories and context from other chats in that project, use Memory > Default memory > Save. Access to conversations outside the project depends on your plan.
- To keep remembered conversation context within that project, use Memory > Project-only memory > Save. This option does not reference saved memories. Changes may take a few hours.
- Bring an existing conversation in through Chat menu > Move to project, or drag it onto the project. It takes on the project’s files and instructions. Conversations created with a GPT cannot be moved.
You can keep 5 files per project on Free, 25 on Go or Plus, and 40 on Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu. Uploads allow up to 10 files at a time.
4. Send big text as a file, not a paste.
Have a long document to share? Attach it as a file. OpenAI describes file attachments as a way to prevent large pasted passages from taking up the whole context window.
The March 2026 release notes introduced automatic attachments for pastes exceeding 5,000 characters. Later updates put that threshold above 10,000 characters for Free, Go, Enterprise and Edu. This helps with large inputs; it does not make conversation capacity unlimited.
5. Try a reasoning model for long sessions.
The published reasoning windows are larger than the Instant windows on Go, Plus and Pro. Go and Plus list 256K for reasoning, while Pro lists 400K. Free’s reasoning capacity varies.
If you have access to a reasoning model, consider it for a longer session. These are total windows shared with other processing, and OpenAI has not tied this warning to an exact number. Treat the figures as a capacity comparison, rather than a promise that the warning will disappear.
6. Report it if it shows up too soon.
If the warning appears earlier than you expected, report it to OpenAI Support. Include the platform you were using, your selected model, your subscription and roughly when it happened.
Those are the details support requested in its community reply. Give that information rather than assuming the message proves a general outage or a newly announced restriction.
7. Upgrade only if you need much longer chats.
OpenAI Support only says some plans offer higher limits. It does not identify a subscription that removes conversation limits, so compare the published capacities with what you need before paying more.
The September 29, 2026 release note lists Pro 200 at $200 per month and Pro 500 at $500 per month. Those prices alone do not establish separate warning thresholds for the two options. The pricing table lists Pro context totals, but OpenAI has not explained exactly how those figures trigger this message. How to Fix the Saved Memory Full Warning
A full saved-memory list needs a different fix. Review the details ChatGPT retains about you and remove anything you no longer need. Deleting a conversation alone does not remove a saved memory created from it. Work through these steps. OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT guide lists every control.
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory > Manage / Saved memories, depending on the controls available.
- Review the entries and delete outdated or duplicate information.
- Alternatively, ask ChatGPT to forget a particular saved detail.
- If you use a memory summary, correct the information it contains. To stop that memory experience, use Settings > Personalization > Memory > Memory summary > ••• > Delete and turn off memory.
- To change experiences, use Settings > Personalization > Memory > Try improved memory, or Settings > Personalization > Memory > Saved memories for the legacy list.
Information referenced from past chats has no separate storage cap. The June 2026 update introduced a twofold memory expansion for US Plus and Pro users first, with Free and Go due later.
What Deleting Memories Does and Doesn’t Do
Chat history and saved details are stored separately. Clearing one does not automatically clear the other. Here is what each action means for you.
- Deleting a conversation. A saved detail taken from that chat can remain after you remove the conversation.
- Removing a saved memory. This removes the saved item, but leaves references to it in your existing conversations.
- Deletion logs. OpenAI may retain records of removed saved memories for up to 30 days.
- Past-chat references. Disabling this through Settings > Personalization > Memory > Reference chat history schedules remembered information for deletion within 30 days. Your conversations remain.
- Disabling memory. Turning memory off leaves your past chats intact.
- Removing the summary. Use Settings > Personalization > Memory > Memory summary > ••• > Delete and turn off memory to remove the summary and disable memory. Your conversations remain.
Back Up Your Chats Before a Big Cleanup
Want a copy before clearing things out? Request an export first. It contains your conversation history and other account information, but cannot recover chats you already deleted.
- Open your profile menu, then follow Settings > Data controls.
- Use Export data > Export > Confirm export to request your download.
- Watch for an email or SMS telling you the file is ready.
- Sign into the account that requested it and download the ZIP within 24 hours of receiving the link.
Preparation can take up to seven days, and this export option is unavailable in Business, Enterprise and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces, where you should contact the workspace owner. If you plan to leave ChatGPT for good, our guide on how to delete your ChatGPT account walks through the full process.
How to Keep Long Chats From Hitting the Limit
You cannot assume a conversation will keep going forever. These habits help you organize ongoing work and manage remembered details, though they do not remove the context limit.
- One topic per chat. Keep separate tasks in separate conversations so each thread stays centered on the information you need.
- Projects for ongoing work. Group related files and instructions so another chat can use the same project material.
- Files for large inputs. Attach long passages instead of pasting them. OpenAI uses automatic attachments for large pastes to reduce pressure on the context window.
- Temporary conversations. For a one-off question without personalization, start another conversation, then use Temporary > Unpersonalized. It uses no memories, custom instructions or plugins and adds no memories while temporary.
- Regular memory reviews. Check saved details every few months and remove stale or duplicate entries. This maintains saved-memory space rather than fixing a locked conversation.
- Short custom instructions. Keep standing instructions concise. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu have a published allowance of 5,000 characters. You do not need to fill it.
What to Do Next
If your conversation says “Chat memory full”, start with the summary handover into a new chat. Check your essential facts and latest work before continuing. You have a way to resume, even though the exact warning threshold remains unexplained.
If saved memories are full, review them through Settings > Personalization > Memory. Remove details you no longer need. We will update this guide when OpenAI explains more about the conversation warning.
FAQs
It is not the fix OpenAI Support recommends for that warning. Support points you toward another conversation with a transferred summary. Removing saved details addresses the separate saved-memory capacity problem.
You do not need to delete your original conversation to continue elsewhere. Support says a summary should accompany the move, but has not confirmed that it includes everything. Keep a copy of the details you need.
No plan is confirmed to remove this conversation limit. OpenAI Support says some subscriptions provide higher limits. Published windows differ, but their connection to this warning’s exact threshold remains unconfirmed.
Whether this warning reflects a bug or an intentional rollout remains unconfirmed. Support describes it as a conversation reaching capacity. No checked release note or status incident explains its introduction.
Review your saved information through Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your experience, use Settings > Personalization > Memory > Manage / Saved memories, or Settings > Personalization > Memory > Memory summary.
It does not add to or revise your memories while it remains temporary. A personalized temporary conversation can still use existing memories. Saving the conversation changes it into a regular chat.
No, disabling memory leaves your conversation history in place. Removing saved information and deleting conversations are separate actions. Disabling past-chat references schedules deletion of remembered information within 30 days, while the chats remain.
