How the PS5 date slipped into 2027
If you remember a 2026 release promise, you remember correctly. September’s official update still pointed to that year, before October’s announcement supplied a January date. Here is how the waiting period developed.
- September 2025. The original FAQ placed the PS5 release after the initial launch. You did not have a specific PlayStation date yet.
- May 19, 2026. The game arrived on Xbox Series X|S and PC. Your PS5 release was still to come.
- August 2026. The Verge’s Tom Warren reportedly expected a PS5 edition, but doubted it would arrive during 2026.
- September 7. Playground’s Series 5 post still listed PS5 for release before the year ended.
- October 6. Playground acknowledged complaints about updates and communication. That statement did not discuss PS5.
- October 7. Dealabs leaker billbil-kun reportedly identified January 26 and a physical edition before official confirmation.
- October 8. Playground confirmed January 26, 2027, with early access beginning January 21.
Did Playground give a reason
Playground has not explained why your PS5 release moved into 2027. You can confirm the dates, the expansion arriving that month and Panic Button’s work on the port.
Last Word on Gaming reportedly connected the delay to launching alongside the expansion, but that remains the outlet’s interpretation. You should not treat it as an explanation from Playground.
PS5 editions and prices compared
Choosing an edition means deciding how many extras you want with your game. Standard provides the base release, while the higher tiers add cars, perks and expansions. Start with the prices and contents below.
| Edition | USD | GBP | EUR | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $69.99 | £59.99 | €69.99 | Base game |
| Deluxe | $99.99 | £89.99 | €99.99 | Base game, Welcome Pack and Car Pass |
| Premium | $119.99 | £109.99 | €119.99 | Deluxe contents, VIP Membership, Time Attack and Italian Passion packs, both expansions and early access |
| Premium Upgrade | $59.99 | £59.99 | €59.99 | Premium extras and early access, with the base game required separately |
You see, the Premium Upgrade is an add-on purchase. It gives you the extras associated with Premium, but you still need the game itself.
What is inside each add on pack
- Car Pass. You receive 30 additional cars. Together with the Welcome Pack, Deluxe supplies 35 extra vehicles.
- Welcome Pack. Your five pre-tuned vehicles are the BMW M4, Ferrari FXX-K Evo, Ford F-150 Raptor R, Mercedes-AMG GT Black and Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII. You also receive an Autoshow Car Voucher and three clothing tickets.
- Time Attack Car Pack. This adds eight cars to your collection. It comes with Premium Edition and Premium Upgrade.
- Italian Passion Car Pack. You receive four additional cars. Both Premium options include this pack too.
- VIP Membership. You earn double race-reward credits and receive a bonus Super Wheelspin each week. Other benefits include three Forza Edition cars, Tokyo City House, Crown Flair, the Hero Pose Emote and Yokoso Car Horn.
The Ferrari J50 pre-order bonus
You receive a pre-tuned Ferrari J50 when you pre-order any full edition or the Premium Upgrade through the PlayStation Store before January 26. The bonus applies across those options, so Premium is not required.
Your Ferrari becomes available after you complete the opening prologue. You will need to finish that introduction before using it.
The first expansion and the free update
January brings additional content alongside your PS5 arrival. The first paid expansion releases across all platforms on January 21, and a free update is planned alongside the PS5 release and expansion. Here is what you can expect from each.
The expansion adds another location, more vehicles and additional gameplay. Premium Edition, Premium Upgrade and the Expansion Bundle include it without another expansion purchase.
You can buy it separately too, although its standalone price has not been announced. The Xbox Store lists the bundle containing both expansions at $49.99, while Expansion 2 still has no specific release date.
What is the first expansion’s theme? That remains unconfirmed, although the trailer reportedly suggests another island.
The free update is separate from the paid expansion and will be available to all players. Playground plans to share its contents nearer release, so you cannot yet compare its additions with the expansion’s features.
Buying the disc version on PS5
If you prefer a physical copy, you will have that option at participating retailers. You will still need a download, though, so the disc does not remove that requirement. Storage is the next detail to consider.
Your PS5 installation size has not been announced. For comparison, the published Xbox figures are 135GB on Series X and 130GB on Series S, while PC requires 160GB.
A PS5 disc holds roughly 100GB, but those other installation sizes do not establish exactly how much data will be on your copy. Push Square reportedly suggested the disc could mainly serve to start the game, which remains unconfirmed.
Sony will reportedly stop producing disc releases in 2028, according to a separate report referenced by Push Square. For your January purchase, the confirmed details are a physical PS5 edition and a required download, with the final storage figure still to come.
Performance on PS5 and PS5 Pro
You have two confirmed display modes to choose from on PS5. The announcement trailer used the base console, so you have seen footage from that hardware already. Here is what is confirmed, along with the details still missing.
- Quality mode. You can play at 4K with a target of 30fps. This is the mode used to capture the announcement trailer.
- Performance mode. You can choose 60fps instead. Its resolution has not been announced, so you cannot yet compare both modes on that detail.
- PS5 Pro. No dedicated enhancements have been announced for your Pro console. The confirmed modes do not establish what additional benefits it might receive.
- PS VR2. You can use Cinematic mode to play on the headset’s virtual screen. The game does not provide VR racing.
- PlayStation Portal. You can play through Remote Play. That is the confirmed option if you want to use your Portal.
Planning to race with a headset? Here is how to connect Bluetooth headphones to your PS5.
Accounts, PS Plus and cross-play on Forza Horizon 6 PS5
Getting your accounts ready matters, especially if you already play on Xbox or Steam. Your Microsoft account connects your progress across those platforms, while PlayStation Plus determines access to online multiplayer. Check these requirements before your first session.
- Microsoft account. You must connect one to your PlayStation Network account when you first start the game. Choose carefully, because this title keeps that account pairing permanently.
- Account changes. You can remove the link, but you can only reconnect the original Microsoft account. You cannot replace it with a different one for this game.
- PlayStation Plus. Essential, Extra or Premium gives you access to online multiplayer. You do not need a subscription for solo or offline play.
- Cross-play. You can race with Xbox and Steam players, and this feature starts enabled. You can turn it off through the game or console.
- Cross-save. Using the same Microsoft account lets you carry your progress between PS5, Xbox and Steam. That shared progress does not give you a free PS5 copy.
- Shared content and trophies. You use the same leaderboards and player-created content across platforms. On PlayStation, achievements become trophies, including a Platinum.
What PS5 players get on day one
Your January release arrives after months of additions on Xbox and PC. You get Japan, more than 550 cars and content that earlier players received over time. These are the main differences to know before you start.
You see, the wait changes what is available when you arrive. PS5 players can access seven months’ worth of EventLab and Estate creations, rather than starting with only the content available at the original launch.
- Car Pass vehicles. The cars added through Car Pass will be available at your PS5 launch. You still need an edition or purchase that includes Car Pass.
- Drift Attack. This mode has already been added at Shimanoyama Circuit. You will not have to wait for its original post-launch update.
- First expansion. Premium buyers can begin with the first paid expansion during January’s early-access period. It arrives across all platforms on January 21.
For context, the Xbox and PC release reached a Steam peak above 270,000 players and a Metacritic score of 91. Those figures describe the earlier launch, rather than a review score or player count for your PS5 version.
Should you pre-order or wait
Your decision comes down to the extras you want and whether five days of early access matters to you. Standard costs $69.99, while Premium costs $119.99. Here is how those purchases compare before you commit.
Buying Standard and then adding the $59.99 Premium Upgrade totals $129.98. That is $9.99 more than buying Premium outright, so choosing Premium initially costs less if you already want all its extras.
If you mainly want the expansions, the Xbox Store lists the two-expansion bundle at $49.99. That price applies to the Xbox listing, and the first expansion’s separate price remains unavailable.
Pre-ordering through the PlayStation Store before January 26 gives you the Ferrari J50 bonus. Waiting gives you more time to assess the expansion details, PS5 storage requirement and any PS5 Pro announcements before choosing your edition.
What to watch before January
You know the release dates and edition prices, but several purchase details remain unanswered. Playground plans to share more information nearer release. Keep these items on your list as January gets closer.
- Expansion reveal. Watch for confirmation of its location, vehicles and gameplay. The theme remains unconfirmed, despite reportedly suggested island clues in the trailer.
- Standalone expansion price. You cannot yet compare buying Expansion 1 separately with a bundle. Its individual price has not been announced.
- Free update details. Playground has confirmed an update for all players alongside the release and expansion. Its actual contents are still to come.
- PS5 storage. Wait for a confirmed installation size before treating Xbox or PC figures as a guide for your console. Neither establishes the PS5 requirement.
- PS5 Pro information. Check whether Playground announces additional support for the Pro. You currently have no confirmed enhancement details to include in your buying decision.
